‘Order by’ function on portfolio pages broken

The ‘Order by’ function on my portfolio pages seems to be broken. No matter what option I select, my portfolios are sorted by their ‘Menu Order’ numbers. I would like to be able to sort my portfolio pages by date (new portfolio items first), and title (alphabetically). Please help! I don’t want to have to add an menu order number to every portfolio post. Thanks.
