    Hello.

I’m considering using this plugin for my blog, but unfortunately, I scrutinized the source code of a blog post and noticed the footnote’s content is embedded like this:

    <span class=”modern-footnotes-footnote__note modern-footnotes-footnote__note–desktop” style=”display: none; top: 1041px; left: 302.5px;”>footnote’s content</span>

Problem is that we have a hidden text, which Google may misinterpret as an attempt to stuff keywords or such. Other plugins show the text from the footnotes at the end of the post, but not this one, so here is my concern.

    Any solution? Thanks.

Since hidden text is such a common tool for web usability, Google suggests they wouldn’t penalize things like this plugin. Of course, they’re vague about it like they are all things SEO, but check out this video from Google that specifically covers usages of hidden text like Modern Footnotes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsW8E4dOtRY

Now, if you’re using the plugin for keyword stuffing, I could see Google penalizing that. But if you’re using it to create a better user experience with content meant to be read by humans, it should be fine from an SEO standpoint.

    Thank you for the reply.

In the meantime, I installed your plugin and I’m in love with it. ?? I am using it for it’s intended purpose, not for keyword stuffing, so I expect I should be fine.

Still, it would be nice to have an option to also show the footnotes at the end of the article, like other similar plugins do. But if not, I’ll use it anyway.

Thank you, I’m glad you’re liking the plugin! I’ve gotten other requests for showing the footnotes at the end of the article, so I’ve got that added on the roadmap and it should be out in an upcoming release.

Glad to see you’re taking suggestions into account!

Just as a personal opinion, it would be nice to have it as an option, so it won’t break the canon for those who like the plugin as it is now, and footnotes shown at the end of the post could be with a smaller font or some distinctive formatting.
