• I know that the instructions for upgrading are simple, but I’m kinda dumb about these things. The instructions say to delete my older wp blog files.
Should I just delete everything in the blog folder? If I do that, then run the upgrade program, how does it know what to upgrade from?
Also, won’t deleting everything also delete all my existing posts and pages?
If not deleting everything, what do I delete?

    Thanks for the help!!

When you run the upgrade script, the only thing you are “upgrading” is the database. The version is stored in the db. You upgrade the source code, by uploading the new source code.

Also, won’t deleting everything also delete all my existing posts and pages?

No, but if you delete everything then you will delete any custom themes, plugins, and maybe most importantly any uploaded files. So, you don’t want to delete what is in your wp-content directory.

Watch the videos at the link below and maybe they will clarify a few things.

Thank you very much for the tutorial links. Would you entertain one more dumb question though?
    What is cpanel?

    Thanks!

Can I safely assume that’s the interface program I use to manage my website provided by my host?

OK… sorry for my ignorance. Yes, I did open my web host Cpanel, and did find a MySQL Server link there.

    Thank you!

You’re welcome. Not all hosts provide Cpanel, but if they do, it makes things a lot easier. Even without Cpanel, the video should provide some insight into the upgrade process…Good Luck.

Yes, the video seems very helpful. I do have a Cpanel, but it’s not as feature-rich as the one in the video, but the video is helping me.

    Thanks!

OK… I have followed all the directions in the video, but after I rename the 2.7 directory, I get an error message saying “Error establishing a database connection.” What did I do wrong?

Check your wp-config.php file…usually that means your db name, username, or password is incorrect. If you recreated that file, then make sure all those variables are correct.

    Thank you for your reply.
I checked the wp-config.php file in the 2.7 folder and all the information is the same as that in the 2.5 wp-config.php file. Should there be something else I should look at?

One note… I don’t think this would make a difference, but I’ll mention it just in case.
My Cpanel doesn’t allow me to 1) rename a folder on the host server, or 2)to extract a .zip file. Therefore, I used my ftp software to rename the old blog folder and the new wordpress folder. I extracted the .zip file on my system and then just ftp’d it to the server.
Like I mentioned, it doesn’t seem like this would make a difference, but I thought I would let you know.

    Thanks for the help.
