sdollen, I suggest you first read the wiki to get precious information. In particular the part that describe the template tags.
There you’ll find how the wp_list_cats() tag works. And this might just contain the answer you where looking for… ??

I think a lot of functions that print out this sort of information take a similar argument. I know the Category list has a similar option. There is a website that describes all of the WP functions and their arguments.
It is a good idea to just go through the function list of WP to get an idea of what they already do for you. ??

actually, within minutes of my post, I had already found and read through the wiki and made the mods to my index file. Thanks though.

I’ve read through the Wiki, Codex, and other obvious references. I want my monthly archive pages, the ones that list all the post excerpts for that month, to list the number of entries at the top of each page, like so:

Archive: February 2006
20 entries
[post excerpts]

I got show_post_count working for me elsewhere. I’m not using wp_get_archives and I don’t want to display a list of all months with entries. If I’m on a specific month’s archive, how can I show the amount of entries for that month at the top of the page? Thank you.

P.S. The link on my name is the software I’m switching from, so you’ll see the archive page there working just fine. It’s the WordPress installation that I’m switching to that I’m having this problem with.
