Something bizarre just happened to my WP 2.7 blog.

I clicked to edit a post, and got the following message:

“Database Upgrade Required. Your WordPress database is out-of-date, and must be upgraded before you can continue. The upgrade process may take a while, so please be patient.”

I was given no option but to click “upgrade wordpress” so I did. What followed was a very long list of “WordPress database error: [MySQL server has gone away]” error messages, and my blog has completely vanished from the net.

I have not yet ftp’ed in to look at it, as I am not sure what to look for.

What is going on? It doesn’t make sense that it required me to upgrade without the option of first backing it up, or waiting until later. And how do I get it back?

If it matters: I installed 2.7 a few weeks back with no problems, and I do not have the automatic upgrade plugin installed.

  • Use phpMyAdmin and see if your tables and their contents are there.

It it possible that your wp_options table was corrupt and WordPress thought it needed to upgrade. You might try to repair your database tables:
    https://paulstamatiou.com/2006/05/31/how-to-quickie-repair-mysql-tables-in-phpmyadmin

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, restore a database backup (Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup).

    If necessary, repair your tables.

Thank you! The tables and their contents are still there, thankfully.

I will try what you suggested.

The repair worked! I am now able to use the admin section as before, editing posts etc. I can also see the front page of the blog on the net.

But there is another problem now: When I click on a post to get to the single page view, the page is missing.

I will work on it from this end, but any suggestions for what to look for is appreciated.

It all looks fine now. Don’t know why the internal links lead no-where for a while – it could have to do with the browser cache.
