The site I was working with was hacked recently by TeaM_CC. They only seemed to re-install WordPress and add a basic welcome post.
I was able to restore everything from backups, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this happen.
Having Googled to find out how/why they are doing this, I was only able to really find their Facebook page of all things. They seem to be a collective from Bangledash and have listed accolades from various softwares/govt. organizations.
Is this a new vulnerability? Or have I simply made a mistake? Are they actually a white-hat collective just proving a point?
If anyone has any more info, I’m curious more than anything.

Is this a new vulnerability?
Since you haven’t mentioned what version of WordPress you were using when the hack took place, that’s impossible to say. Were you aware that a security-patch update was released recently (WordPress 4.8.3)?
That said, the vector (way in) for the hack could have been via a plugin, theme or something else on the server.
Or have I simply made a mistake?
Only if you haven’t been keeping WordPress + its installed themes & plugins up to date. And you have only ever installed themes & plugins from trusted sources (like www.ads-software.com), haven’t you? Have you reviewed Hardening WordPress?
Are they actually a white-hat collective just proving a point?
A white hat would not have damaged your site.
