Large numbers of tables

    Hello Tobias, I hope I find you well and as usual, thank you so much for creating and maintaining such a superb, premium quality tool and providing it as a free plugin.

    My question is a simple one.

    I am thinking of creating a large number of tables, some containing hundreds of lines of multi columned information.

    The number of individual tables would be likely to exceed 200+

    So may I ask, would this high number of tables have a detrimental effect upon my website, in relation to resources or through huge increases in database size, etc etc

    I could simply list these tables as downloadable Excel sheets but I’m considering displaying them through Tablepress on a single page/post per Excel input. I obviously would not be displaying multiple tables on one single page.

    Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.

    Hi,

    thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

    This is a bit tricky to answer. Tables are stored as one large piece of (encoded) text, similar to a large post/page in the database. So that should not cause issues. Of course, the data has to be sent from the server to the browser, so depending on the connection of the visitor, this could take a moment (but that’s the same with all solutions).

    However, the loading of the admin screens of TablePress (like the “List of Tables” or the individual “Edit” screens of a table) might be slow. This is still something that needs work (which I’m already doing ?? ) to make things faster when a site has many large tables.

    I always wondered why sometimes the backend of large tables would take a while to load sometimes.

    Other than that, for me your plugin has always operated flawlessly and for that I am very grateful.
