post format gallery doesn’t work in twentyseventeen theme

    I have a problem; I’m using the twentyseventeen theme, and I’m getting into it. And I’d love to have all pictures related to one post being in one slideshow. At best, they’d be in the header picture, but as a slideshow. And the screenshots shown in several descriptions look like the “gallery” post format should do exactly that.

    But when I apply it, nothing happens. it says somewhere that a box appears underneath the post editor, but there isn’t. So I can’t figure out where to tell wordpress that there shall be a slideshow and which pictures I’d like to have in it.

    Did I miss something? Or is it broken? Can someone help?
