• Hi, More than anything I need advice, tips and/or pointed in the right direction of what I need to do. I was asked to take an old html/php based website and create a new wordpress website while leaving the backend the old website up due to data that might be needed someday so I going to install the wordpress in a fold so the old website can be kept.

My questions is (before I start researching how):
Should I connect the wordpress to the old database? Will that work? Or would it be better to export the old database as cvs and import it into the new wordpress site?

    Thank you for your time
    K

    Probably not.

You’d probably have to edit the CSV to make it conform to WP fields (or map it using a plugin like WP All Import (or one of the other import plugins).

Just a caveat: Leaving the old site up but unmaintained could lead to security issues down the line. Once I had all the data, I’d remove the site from any publicly accessible site.

Thanks for the advice and link. I hope to slowly get the client to give up the old website after he see the new website is much better. He’s had trouble and broken promises with other designers he has hired so I have to earn trust before he will give it up.
