I posted a few weeks back how the Meta Description length in yoast seemed to be buggered up, letting me post nearly a full article before giving an orange warning.

Following on from that, I just did a bit of research and found that it WASN’T buggered up after all, and that Google has now extended the meta description length.

Would it not therefore be an idea to put a counter in the description box, like in previous incarnations of yoast, and like in the AIOSEO plugin, to let you know when your base limit has been reached, and for when you are close to the end of your meta description length?

Are you referring to a text counter? Because there already is a progress bar right under the meta description which shows how close you are to reaching the maximum length.

If you’d like a text counter instead, then it’s not possible at the moment. We’re actively using the bug tracking on our GitHub repository so your best next step would be to create a new feature request for our developers at https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new. You can create a new issue to submit your feature request. You will need an account to create one.

Don’t forget to include the URL to this conversation in your feature request!

No, my idea of adding a text counter was to show initially exactly how many characters were allowed in the meta description box – the present system works just fine.

However some indication of how many characters were allowed would stop anyone coming into these forums with problems that were already sorted but not widely publicised – like presuming that there is a fault with the ‘green bar’ – even if it were just an advisory note under the title box and the meta description box.

Thanks for the clarification. This would still need to be submitted as a feature request though, so we would recommend using the previously mentioned directions on how to submit this as a feature request on GitHub.
