I have some images that are named in Japanese, such as 麻美.jpg. I get the following error when I try to regenerate all thumbnails:

Skipped Attachment ID 489 (麻美): The fullsize image file cannot be found in your uploads directory at 2018/01/麻美.jpg. Without it, new thumbnail images can’t be generated.

The file is there but is the only file that has Japanese characters in the filename… seems like a bug perhaps. Is this something you can support?

Thanks for the bug report! I’ve confirmed that there’s issues with such filenames and have open an issue to track the problem:

Thanks for the note and effort, but the fix doesn’t seem to work for me. I upgraded to 3.0.2 and tried running the regeneration and I get the same message:

Skipped Attachment ID 489 (櫻井麻美): The fullsize image file cannot be found in your uploads directory at 2018/01/櫻井麻美.jpg. Without it, new thumbnail images can’t be generated.

I thought maybe it was that it would only work going forward (i.e. something was messed up with the database entry for the existing image) so I tried uploading from scratch and that was even worse. Two issues: (1) the image gets uploaded to the library but the thumbnail is missing when viewed from the media library page; and (2) thumbnails are created on upload and are visible on disk but they are named with really weird file names (they look like they are using some other text encoding). I called the new file 櫻井麻美櫻井麻美.jpg and the file names on disk all say ????o?éo????????o?éo????.jpg.

That sounds more like there’s something wrong with your hosting. My plugin doesn’t do anything outside of it’s Tools page, so if you’re running into during the initial upload, something else is certainly wrong.

Sure enough. I tried on my live site and it worked fine. My local install must be messed up somehow. Thanks!
