how to change number of products displayed on home page

Each of my shop index pages displays 12 products. But I would like to decrease the number displayed to 9 products.

I added the code to my child’s function.php file, which is given here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/change-number-of-products-displayed-per-page/

However, this seemed to have no effect and did not change the number of products displayed on the page.
