I have followed the steps to install wordpress etc. Have filezilla and added the new theme which I had downloaded and unzipped.

However, no new theme appears on my wordpress site.

What can I do? Please note I’m on a Mac if that matters?

    Thanks

Make sure you’ve uploaded the new theme to the correct folder i.e.
/wp-content/themes. Also make sure you don’t have it “nested” as in
    /wp-content/themes/themefolder/themefolder/themefiles.

    Thanks Gangleri
Just checked, it is in the folder wordpress/wp-content/themes.

Still no solution, need more help!

    And the second thing?

Also make sure you don’t have it “nested” as in
    /wp-content/themes/themefolder/themefolder/themefiles.

The file is where you indicate it should be but still the new theme does not appear on my wordpress site.

What other options do I have to try and fix this problem?

It obviously isn’t where it belongs, or it would show in your dashboard. If it’s there properly – I HAS to show.

richardp, if you provide the url to your blog, and the name of the theme you are trying to install, this would be infinitely easier to troubleshoot.

@richardp I trust you are not expecting your site to transform automatically. You need to check under the “Appearance” section in the admin area, and select the new theme (assuming you’ve unzipped and uploaded it correctly) that appears on the dashboard.

If it is missing from your admin area, then indeed – we’ll need more concrete information, like whooami is pointing out.

    blog = https://www.alineplanning.org
We want the theme – magazine basic which we unzipped and tried to add via filezilla under the wp-content/themes folder.

Keep looking in appearance and themes and it only has the standard list. We also tried another theme incase it was a problem with the magazine theme but still the same problem.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, hope this info gets us closer to the solution

Hmm, I don’t see a folder called magazine-anything in the listing here (that’s the themes folder on your website).

Also you seem to be using a non-default theme (Fusion) successfully, so it can’t be that the themes mechanism is not functional.

Try uploading the theme in this folder more carefully, make sure it’s there in this directory in the first place?

I concur. you are not uploading the theme to the proper directory, by the looks of it.

I have just looked a a video recommended by other users and there appears a need to put the theme into a folder with the name public_html

I do not have this theme when I connect via filezilla, penguin or cyberduck (the three ftps I have tried).

    Is this a problem with
    1. the ftp,
    2. my connection between my ftp and my wordpress site
    3. the wordpress site
    4. The domain dreamHost

Any more help would be great, feel we are close to solving this for me.

    Thanks

this is NOT that hard. connect to your site using cyberduck.

Navigate around your files and directories until you find a dir that has ALL those other directories.

    see them here?????

    https://www.alineplanning.org/wp-content/themes/

THATS where your new themes need to be uploaded to.

this is NOT a dreamhost hosting problem, nor a problem with the ftp application (cyberduck) you are using. Its a user problem.

…there appears a need to put the theme into a folder with the name public_html

Erm, there should be no such need.

Navigate to public_html and look for a folder called wp-content. Inside that folder, there’s a folder called themes. That is where the folder for the new theme needs to go.

This should work, considering it looks like wordpress is installed in your webroot. However, if not, go by what has already been pointed out:

Navigate around your files and directories until you find a dir that has ALL those other directories.
