I was really excited to find this plugin, until I realized it doesn’t work. Apparently, it was a decent plugin at one time, but the author has simply lost interest in it, to the point where it is worthless. Maybe I should try my hand at it.
I have dabbled in PHP and JavaScript, and I am new to WordPress. Basically, I know just enough to get myself into trouble. Just being honest, but I’ll tell you what I’ve come up with.
Reviewing the wp_bp_groups table, I noticed a field called parent_id. Buddy Press created that field, but I’m not sure Buddy Press actually does anything with it. In the one group I created, the field simply contains a zero.
For a subgroup, that would be an obvious place to put the parent group ID. The danger is that Buddy Press might actually use that field for some purpose of which I am unaware. Also, if it is currently unused, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be used by some future version of Buddy Press.
I just like to avoid potential conflicts. Can anyone tell me if there is any danger in putting something into that field? If that is a problem, I could simply create another field easily enough, perhaps naming it parent_group_id.
]]>Hi ya,
This looks like something I would like for BuddyPress, but the last updates are years ago.
Thanks.
]]>Dear folks,
I’m using this plugin since years on my internal website and with all the help and comments here, it still works nicely. Until now. I just realized, that I always get an error message when I try to create a new group. I can move on until the 3rd step called “Settings”, but then I get the message “There was an error saving group details. Please try again.”. So I can’t go any further on the group creation, but when I look back to my groups overview, the group is created and shown there (with no Hierarchy and all settings on standard).
When I deactivate the BP Group Hierarchy plugin, it works just as normal creating a new groups (no errors). Do you have any ideas / solutions for me?
I assume that this has something to do with the new BuddyPress version?! And maybe a little hint could be, that the options at “Group Invitations” on the Settings page are not selected (meaning no dot on any option), which I never had before.
Hope to get any requests from you, thanks in advance!
My WordPress Installation and plugins:
WordPress: 4.9.1
BuddyPress: 2.9.2.
BP Group Hierarchy 1.4.3 (modified)
If you need an overview of my other installed plugins, just tell me ??
Hi All –
Have tried both the original plugin and the svn trunk version hierarchical-groups-for-bp-master…
On activation i get a backend error 500 – remove plugin all good – frontend and group creation all works 100% – any ideas?
Really need subgroups as it is the business case of a community I am building
]]>I have the same issue reported here.
I have been through the whole “disable all plugins, re-enable one by one” business, and this is definitely the culprit.
I have a possibly unusual case, however: I am using the BP Groups Hierarchy with patches by @r-a-y located here. I used that one (instead of the one here on WP.org) because it was recommended that I apply all the patches for the BP Group Hierarchy plugin….and a helpful soul over at the CBOX support forum informed me that @r-a-y had combined them all into one fork.
I will report this issue on github as well, and hopefully there will be some movement to fix it, or consolidate all the patches into a single fix that works. This is obviously a much appreciated plugin, so it would be great to have it fully functional and supported.
Thanks!
]]>I wont upgrade to 4.7 as it makes everything on my sites (on different hosts with different themes and different sets of plugins), fail. So if I have to wait, so be it lol.
I am using the Infinity Theme that CUNY uses. It’s farily straight forward and simple, and for this type of site, simple is good. I have numerous plugins installed, but I’ve tried deactivating all but buddypress and bpress and this still happens…
https://gyazo.com/167b84631702f9c29afc9adb4306c128
only on the front end mind-you. My dashboard is fine and all I have to do is deactivate it again and all is well.
Thank you for any assistance. This would be a very useful plugin if it would work, and I know it does, or did, I used it with this theme for another site, 3 years ago and it was just spiffy!
Thanks!
Tracy
My site displays the count of members in each group.
I have found BP Group Hierarchy messes this up and the counts are shown as zero.
The members are still there and deactivating this plugin restores the counts.
Would love to see this plugin updated but meanwhile it has to stay deactivated.
]]>Here my BuddyPress 2.7 RC1 test results on front-end with that plugin activated
On groups directory:
Group members count shows 0 -> Public group / 0 members
I see the join group button, even for group i’m already member of.
On a group header:
No admin or mods are shown, even in groups i’m admin or mod.
Group Member button -> the count shows 0
I see the join group button, even for group i’m already member of.
As 2.7 introduce group types, i guess this plugin would loose his interest.
]]>Fatal error: Class ‘BP_Groups_Component’ not found in /home/…/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-group-hierarchy/bp-group-hierarchy-loader.php on line 6
This is the error I get after activating on a new WP multisite installation. I’ve checked and can’t seem to find a plugin conflict.
Any responses appreciated
]]>Even with the recommended fix on
https://github.com/ddean4040/BP-Group-Hierarchy/pull/21/files
the Group Hierarchy plugin still breaks my Boss theme on the frontend. The backend is still accessible but the fronted is plain white.
Anyone having a similar problem or knows what the problem could be?

Hello,
Wanted to submit the debug issues showing on a clean install with BP2.5 not sure if they have any symptoms other than the message;

Just wanted to provide for if this plugin will be tested and brought up to support BP2.5 officially.
Thanks

]]>Hello,
Thank you for the plugin, your logged messages using bp_group_hierarchy_debug were very helpful while setting up. Now that I’ve set-up I’m moving on to debug other plugins on my install but am finding all your messages cluttering up my debug.log.
I’d love to see an option on bp_group_hierarchy_settings which allows you to enable/disable debug which works in tandem with the WP_DEBUG settings in wp-config.php so that I can leave debug enabled on WordPress but suppress the informational messages generated by your plugin.
Thank you
]]>Hello,
I test both ” BP Group Hierarchy” and “BP Group Hierarchy Propagate” in my wordpress MU, and it did create sub group, but there are two issue:
1.Cause the site very slow.
2.it did create sub group, but only be visible in group directory, and not visible in group tree tab page of Group profile.
By the way, my buddypress is install on subsite, but activated in network wide, so how should I activate BP Group Hierarchy? in site wide or network wide?

]]>Hello..
Can I disable subgroups subgroups. I only need one level subgroups. Thanks..
]]>It seems like privileges are broken in this vital plugin ??
For example, we see that Group admins can’t create member groups as it is now with current WP /BP.
Anyone with a code tweak while we hope for this great and useful plugin to be updated for current versions?

Hello there,
I’m already using this plugin since 3 years and I’m very thankful for it, as it makes the group navigation much more easy. But as I have realized, the plugin hasn’t been updated in last 2 years and I’m having more and more difficulties with it (can say more about them if you want).
So I’m just asking: will this plugin still be updated or have you stopped working on it? and if updated, when will that be?
If it will not be updated, can you recommend any similar plugins that i may use in future?
Thanks for a short reply!

Is it possible that the users are not able to join the site root category?
Some hack or code if possible?
Thanks in advance
]]>Hi !
I put some existing groups in a new parent group. WordPress notice it, but when you click on the subgroup tab in the group menu, its subgroups are not listed.
The message, under the button “create a subgroup” is
“No subgroup found”
I can i fix it ?
Thanks a lot!
PS: We use WP 4.2.4 and BP 2.3.2.1

]]>Hi,
can anybody help me with the issue that the sub groups are not shown in the group list?
– If I choose the flat-view, there is no hierarchy
– If I choose the first option, there is no change ( no hierarchy )
– If I choose the sec. option, there is a [+]/[-] in the top-level groups, but also no hierarchy. On click on [+]/[-] nothing changes.
– If I choose both options, again I can see the [+]/[-] but also with no effect.
Hi,
I’v just created a german translation. Where can I upload the files?
Greetings,
just a quick question.
I figured out how to get subgroups using the get_children functions. How do you request only root-based groups? Those that are either orphaned, or have no parents?
Thank you.
