When I decided to make my own webcomic with webcomic focused theme in 2014, I found Comic Easel and I fell in love with it. Can be hard to understand at first, but when you get it working on a good theme, it’s the best.
I actually translated it to Brazilian Portuguese and changed some bits to enhance it on image SEO. So if someone need it too, just let me know.
Cheers to Frumph!

I think this plugin is pretty excellent. Documentation is sort of lacking but it looks like the author is busy revamping it after some big changes over the last few versions.

All of the functionality and customization I need, and plus some. To top it off, the author is extremely approachable and eager to help with all of my (user error) issues.

As a wp newbie I was able to get my webcomic up and looking slick as heck thanks to Comic Easel, kudos to the developer Frumph for creating such a great plugin for comic artists every where. I had to do a little of my own CSS to make everything look the way I wanted and there was a lot of trial and error adding comic functionality to my chosen theme but even as a newbie I was able to do it with the Comic Easel support forums. Much easier and less intimidating than using Comic Press, and way more versatile! You aren’t limited to one theme, you can add Comic Easel to any theme if you just follow along with the instructions on installation and integration on the Comic Easel support site! Thanks Frumph, keep being awesome and making cool things!

This is a phenomenal and easy to use plugin that was a huge help creating a webcomic site for a client. The result was exactly what they wanted!

I have to admit, I tried Comic Press a long time ago, got terribly discouraged, and gave up. But at least some of that was because I was not happy using WordPress, and half of it didn’t work because of my lousy OS. Since then, WordPress has come a long way, I got free of !@#$! Windows, and Comic Press functionality branched off into this great plugin.
Because I was curious, I also recently tried Automattic’s Panel. It’s OK, but it’s got a long way to go. Most importantly, the support team doesn’t seem to understand webcomics and its peculiar needs like Frumph does. One user asked in their support forum if it was possible to link the comic to the next page–this is a common practice in webcomics, and of course the user was looking for *automated* navigation, as is available in Comic Easel. The support team’s response was that, sure, you can link your image file to any URL you want! By hand…oh, heavens to Betsy.
And, of course, Panel has the same template limitation as the original Comic Press, only without the multiple layout options of Comic Press. So Comic Easel is still the best way to organize comics in WordPress.
Since I have been setting up a new site, I’ve been trying out a variety of WordPress templates, and it was easy to install Comic Easel in child copies one by one to see if it would integrate OK. The comic module fit in fine with just about everything I tried–there were a couple of oddly configured templates that might have taken more figuring, but out of the dozen or more I tried, it was a snap in every other case.
You may still need to hack some stuff. My website name is not the name of the comic, so in the ‘index.php’ file above the Comic Easel code, I added a small header. No biggie! A little CSS tweaking here and there, you’re in business.
Thanks for helping out the struggling cartoonist all these years, Frumph!

I can’t write code and I don’t even know what CSS or HTML means. But with “Comic Easel” I was able to build a really great looking and functioning website to post my comic. But if you are familiar with website building, there are a lot of additional more “advanced” features to explore. ??

Comic Easel makes it so easy to post cartoons online, I would be lost without it. Phil migrated me over from Comicpress, and helped me customize my website so it looks the way I want. I highly recommend this plugin for anybody who makes cartoons online.

It took me a bit to work everything out and I still run into the occasional challenge, but Phil is ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS available to help.
Phil, the only question I have, and I am not removing a star for it, is for every update, I have to reload my custom buttons. Surely I am doing something wrong here. I over wrote existing buttons because coding is like crawling through glass for me. I can do it, but I am not fond.

You still need to be able to tinker with the CSS if you want to customize your theme, and I could do with a no chapters button, but in all other ways it absolutely removes the headaches of webcomic website management. The developer is also readily available and willing to assist with any problems you encounter. I have one comic running old comicpress and one running CE, and I will absolutely be switching the first over to CE.

not sure if i got the version of wp right there , anyhow I’ve had a few headaches (some i caused myself i might add) but on the whole as a guy who knows more about my dvd player than programming a website without wp and easel my web comic would not be around. Philip has not nothing but be supportive and helpful. one problem i do have is people attaching links to my blogs GRR! my askimit catches them but I get tried of cleaning spam.

I have no experience with any programming necessary to build my own website, yet I wanted to make a website that looked unique and was customizable enough so it didn’t look like a lot of cookie-cutter templates that you see all over the place.
Comic Easel has such wide applicability that I could really make my comic’s website look how I wanted to and not feel like it was just “good enough.” Comic Easel is a veritable gift to online comic creators and is a plugin I quickly and easily recommend to anybody looking to post their comics online. I would argue that it helped make webcomics what they are today, which is no small feat.

I cannot stress enough how important it is for people to use comic press if they are just starting out in web comics. When I began my web comic I had so many things to worry about – the art, the coloring, the lines everything. The last thing I needed to do was learn how to code a website. Thanks to this plugin I was able to begin making my comic in a very short time and focus on getting my comic better instead of learning CSS and other coding issues. I am so happy that this exists and I highly recommend it if you are new to comics want to get your work on the web and do not want to spend all your time learning how to program! It is easy to use and more importantly it is easy for your readers to navigate through your comics. Give it a try!

I gotta say, for all that they claim it makes everything easier than ComicPress, I’ve had nothing but headaches. Latest one being the whole ‘Chapters’ debacle. If you put your comics into separate chapters, hitting the ‘First’ button no longer takes you to your very first comic, but instead to the first comic of the current chapter. I have over 1000 comics, and in order to fix this, I now have to go through each comic and set it’s chapter to just ‘comic’. They all have to be the same. Problem is; I can’t bulk edit it. Doing so only adds a new chapter title to each comic; it wont simply take the unwanted chapter title away. So now I get to change them all by hand. This is a huge headache, and it was NOT how I wanted to spend my free time.

I spent all day just trying to get ONE widget out of it to show thumbnails it clearly was designed to do. Any documentation I can find on the mess wants you to be a CSS building genius – when (surprise!) there are still a lot of comic artists out there who are more interested in getting the next page done as opposed to wasting their time on the internet all day.
Good system, okay, I can’t say stable because I’ve been booted out ten times so far unable to log back in for whatever reason. Mostly I’m annoyed. If you’re going to offer a widget, offer one that works. Not one that’s got a single solitary link to a forum post that answers your issue… that’s DOWN.
But thank you for this free system anyway. I’m not totally unappreciative. Just angry at my lost time. And wishing I wasn’t being forced to use WordPress for this in the first place.

There aren’t enough reviews of this plugin. I can’t imagine how many webcomics are running on this FREE plugin. This seriously makes everything possible. Always being updated, and the author is always down to answer questions if you tweet/email/whatever him.
I mean, seriously. I tried the other webcomic theme for wordpress and it was confusing as hell. Who spends all their time (I’m sure it’s not ALL his time) making a sweet-ass plugin that’s simple, easy to use and free? Someone who really loves the webcomic community, that’s who.
Give him more stars. Send him a few bucks, or at very least take the time to write him a review and say thanks.
Thanks.

Excellent plugin with support you can count on from a dedicated developer who has given an unprecedented amount of time and love to the Webcomic community over the years. It is currently the backend of many professional comic Websites.

There are only two real plugins for managing correctly comics under WP. This one is very well integrated in WP engine.
