I just wanted a simply solution to allow people to get email notifications. This works great. I tested the one with more downloaded and like this one better. It just works. I wish it was easier to edit the email template and design, but that isn’t a big deal. Using it on DIVI blog and it works great for me. Takes a few minutes to send but maybe that is my email server not the plugin. Check it out in action here: mattenser.me/blog/is-belief-in-god-reasonable/
Thanks for the great plugin!

I tried it with a test comment using an actual email address and then replied to the comment using another actual email address but did not receive any email on the first one.
Any idea how this could work?

Excellent little plugin for a feature that should actually be native to WP.

Thanks a lot, it works like a charm!

Not sure if this works with previous WP version but it does not work with WP 6.3. If you set your WP discussion settings to “email me whenever anyone posts a comment” — that should send an email to the author. If this plugin is then installed, the email will go to the site admin address and no email will be sent to the post author. When I removed the plugin, the WordPress Settings worked as expected and notifications went to the post author.

This plugin seems like a viable replacement to Subscribe to Comments Reloaded.

I recommend everyone to use this plugin and appreciate the developer’s work.
This plugin works exactly the way we want to, plus it has the option to add a GDPR checkbox just below the comment.
Thanks for the plugin Arno!

I always hated the WordPress default commenting system for one reason, it never sends a follow-up reply email to Comment Author. Guess, what? This plugin fixes it instantly. Of course, your e-mail system should be working in first place with proper SMTP services.
It helps in keeping the user engaged. It’s easy to use. There is sufficient option to be compliant with GDPR. The author of the plugin is professional, provides timely support. I wish him good health and happiness.
If you’re a serious blogger, I highly recommend this plugin. Go for it.

It’s easy to install, provides exactly what I need in the simplest way.
Being able to change the mail form a little would be great though.

Охуен*ый плагин , ничего лишнего
(Good plugin, nothing more)
Я дополнил его кастомным эмейлом и именем отправителя
(I added it with a custom email and the name of the sender)

A nice solution to avoid platforms like Disqus.
It would be nice, if the GDPR checkbox would not only be checked on the server side but also client side using JavaScript with an alert box or popup inside the page. So people would not get confused when there is this plain error message by WordPress. But besides that it works just fine.

The plugin works great so far, but it lacks the feature of a double-optin-mail to verify the email-adress of the commenter.
If that and the customization of the sender email adress would be added, I will give 5 stars ??
Have a nice day everyone!

Hi,
Thanks for the plugin.
First
I realized uninstall and reinstalling keep all of the setting. Please be kind enough to clean up the settings when uninstalled.
Update: He replied that he will work on it
Also, template, with some tweaking, you can make customized email.

U have a little bug in your Plugin.
Check the subscription checkbox by default <= This setting in the Adminsection will be ignored.
It is always enabled!
change your function from
function cren_get_default_checked() {
return cren_get_option('cren_subscription_check_by_default', true);
}
to
function cren_get_default_checked() {
return cren_get_option('cren_subscription_check_by_default', false);
}
Currently, the checkbox is always checked.

Simple and useful plugin

The plugin is great, simple and lightweight as advertised, but needs a bit of work.
My main complaint is that the subscribe checkbox only shows if the person commenting is not logged in. This is because it is hooked in using
comment_form_default_fields
which is for the ‘logged out’ form.
It seems like an arbitrary distinction to make, only showing the checkbox to logged out users, especially on blogs where users MUST be logged in to comment in the first place. To show checkbox for logged in users:
add_action( 'comment_form_logged_in_after', 'logged_in_fields' );
function logged_in_fields() {
$commenter = wp_get_current_commenter();
echo implode('', cren_comment_fields(array()));
}
This puts the checkbox above the comment textarea. To move it below, I used flex-box order css. Maybe there is a better hook to use to move it below?
Next big thing. The email has to have an ‘unsubscribe’ link which stops the email notification. I know it add to the plugin but it is basically a legal requirement and, on really busy comment sections, the user could become very annoyed without the ability to unsubscribe.
The next thing, which perhaps should be a setting, is that the plugin sends an email to the comment parent author even if they are replying to their own comment. Why would people reply to their own comments? Well, in blogs where comment sections are limited in depth (to say depth of 3 replies), the way to ‘reply’ to someone in the bottom depth is to reply to the parent comment which can often be oneself. A simple fix for this to go within “cren_comment_notification”:
//if replying to self dont send email
if($email == $comment->comment_author_email){
return false;
}
Lastly, but just an idea and probably best as a setting, you might want to check before sending mail:
IF the discussion setting “Email me whenever Anyone posts a comment” is ON
THEN don’t send the reply notification to the post author, because they will be getting an email about a new comment anyway.
These things might improve the plugin while still keeping it lightweight. Cheers
