I had installed the Ultimate Category excluder that is recommended everywhere but it did not do the job. I had checked a category to be excluded from the front page and it did not go away.
Then I search for an alternative plugin and found this Front Page Category one. Just had to figure out the settings are in an additional menu item almost at the bottom in Customize -> Appearance -> Front Page Category menu item.

Thank you! It worked out of the box!

Plugin is easy to set up and use, and does exactly what I need it to do. And when the newest release didn’t work quite right with my theme, the developer was quick to help out.

This plugin claims that it
is a plugin that let you select the categories that appear on the front page of your website
which is wrong. This plugin actually hides the categories you don’t want to appear on the frontpage.
This can be a huge difference if you have posts in multiple categories.
With a simple update, the plugin could actually do what it says or let the user choose whether he wants inclusion or exclusion.

I have found this plugin to be invaluable for my website as I can now select exactly which categories should appear on the front page.
For those who are complaining that there are no settings, you must go to the Customizer page of WordPress. This can be found in Appearance on left side dashboard menu, then select customise from the list. Once customizer opens, simply select Front Page Categories from the list and you will see your options.
It’s so easy to use but most people appear to expect a settings option to appear on the dashboard menu or under the plugin on the plugins page, which it doesn’t have.
Great work from the developers and a big thanks.

There is no option for plugin settings!

Instructions do not explain settings

The plugin works fine, however, don’t use it when you use the WordPress app on your phone; it will prevent you from editing posts in other categories. Also messes with Jetpack results on your phone.

Does not work when pages are categorized. Can you please add this feature to allow only categorized pages/posts to show up on the homepage/front page? Great work! Thanks!

Not working for me.

This doesn’t work for my use case – it will exclude categories but in an OR fashion instead of AND – so if your post is in any excluded categories it won’t show up on the front page. For me this means anything I want on the front page can only exist in categories for the front page which prevents me from sorting the way I’d like

Still works as of 11/2015. Posts categorized under child categories require the parent and child to be checked in the plugin settings.

Very simple, very effective. Old code, but I had no complaints.
