Perfect improvement over the Genesis Custom Page widget. Not really sure why StudioPress didn’t do it this way.
This works expecially well in conjuction with enbling support for manual excerpts for pages (see below) and then creating a manual excerpt for each page for which a GFPA widget will be created.
Here’s the code I added to my functions.php:

PS: How hard would it be to update the plugin to be compatible with the newest version of WordPress? I mean, it works for me for 4.7.3 (current), but I think lots of people are gun-shy about installing plugins that are not “current”. I had an issue that was a conflict with another plugin. Nick diagnosed and fixed the issue in a matter of minutes even tho the issue was not with this plugin. Super awesome fast support along with an excellent upgrade to the stock Genesis featured page plugin.

I’ve used this plugin when linking to pages that needed a custom paragraph for the home page, and it’s great for that.
But it can do a lot more. By using the custom link, image, and content, you can also use it for individual custom post types, or even posts for that matter. It’s super versatile, but simple enough for clients!

There are several plugins that give you the Genesis Featured Page widget with additional settings. Compared to the other ones I found, this one has exactly the additional settings I wanted without overdoing it, making the widget admin UI simpler to use than some of the competing plugins. And now you can now customize the layout, which is the one feature I found myself wanting. Love it!
