According to developers, this plugin is tested to WordPress 3.5.1 and BuddyPress 1.7. Since i need to use forums, I choosed bbPress release 2.3.1. and I installed it.
Now according to the advices suggested by the developers of this Import plugin:

“Before continuing, it’s recommended that you do the following:
Activate BuddyPress / bbPress forums (Dashboard> BuddyPress> Forum Setup)”

If I check into the Dashboard> BuddyPress> I can’t find any Forum Setup tab?
I get instead three tab: “Components” “Pages” and “Setting” and into the “Components” window I have all the components activated excluding the “Retired” one which is “Group Forums” accompanied with the follow statement “BuddyPress Forums are retired. Use bbPress.”
I’m quite confused about how to proceed.
Why BuddyPress dashboard don’t show me any tab or menu about bbPress which I installed and activated?
And more, is it suitable bbPress 2.3.1 with that coupled WP 3.5.1 and BuddyPress 1.7?
Any suggest will be appreciated.

I am currently trying to port over over NING site from https://www.methodspace.com to a fresh install of WordPress hosted on Pantheon, and have been running into various issues.

Each time I try to import the data from the JSON files, either the page crashed and states “No account imported” or I get a complete blank screen. Now, I have managed to get the 25k + users to import over, but I cannot seem to get the ning-blogs.json file to load.

Just wondering is there is a fix that anybody knows about, or maybe even another way of porting these entries into a fresh post.

I know this plugin is old and looks to no longer be supported. I have gone through the import process and a few things just do not work. Specifically Friend Relationships and Profile Fields.

Anyone that has gotten this to work with recent versions of WordPress can you please offer any assistance. I am also willing to pay for the help.

I hope you’ll forgive the (somewhat) double-post. The original version of this post appears as a reply in another thread.

I have now completed what seems to be a successful import from Ning into the most current WordPress (v3.8) installation configured with both Buddypress (v1.9) and BBPress (v2.51) using this plugin, despite the general belief that it is broken. This may or may not work for you; perhaps it only worked for me because of some particular nature in my Ning forum that differs from yours. I have a forum that is a couple years old with fewer than 100 members.

There may be a much easier way to do this. I arrived at these steps through trial and error and stopped looking for an easier way whenever I found something that worked. If you vary from the steps below in any way and it doesn’t work for you, well, you’ve been warned. ??

However, I have now repeated these steps three times from scratch and gotten the same results.

Since I posted this the first time, I have also learned how to import blog posts and events. So, I have been able execute a complete, successful transfer (except photo, movie, and music galleries). The steps for transferring these two items are now included below.

My first attempt to use the Import From Ning plugin was very unsuccessful. I believe it was because I was on my server. This time I did a local install and I think somehow that made a difference.

So, here’s what worked.

1. I went back to the Ning Archiver and did a fresh download.
2. I did a local install of WordPress 3.7.1 using XAMPP. If you haven’t tried local WordPress development, you’ll have to Google how to do that. I put the Ning files in wp-content/ning-files.
3. I renamed the file “ning-blogs.json” to “ning-blogs-local.json”. This was the only way I could get the blogs to import. The import plugin couldn’t find them under their original name.
4. I got on localhost and signed into my newly created site.
5. I went to Install Plugins –> Add New -> Search –> The Events Calendar (latest version, v3.2). Installed and activated. The Ning import plugin needs this calendar to be installed to transfer events. I don’t know why–perhaps it creates necessary fields in the database. If you don’t have any events (or events you care about) in your Ning calendar you can ignore this and let the importer stall with a fatal error. This is the last step of the import process so it doesn’t matter if the importer dies here.
6. I went to Install Plugins –> Add New -> Search –> Import from Ning (latest version, v2.1). Installed and activated.
7. I went to Plugins –> Add New -> Upload -> BuddyPress 1.6.1. That’s right. I had previously downloaded an old version of BuddyPress and I installed and activated that.
8. After BuddyPress was activated, a message about the BuddyPress Installation Wizard Link appeared at the top of the page. I clicked in.
9. Walking through the Wizard page now…The first page is Components. No changes there, I clicked Save & Next.
10. Pages. I made sure the “create automatically” buttons were selected. Save & Next.
11. Permalinks. I like my Permalinks based on post name, but you won’t see that here. I jumped out of the Wizard by going to Settings -> Permalinks and selected those, then I went back to the Wizard (the message was still at the top of the page, so I clicked that). The Wizard always starts from the beginning so I had to Save & Next through the first three pages of that again, ensuring again that my pages would be (or were) automatically created.
12. Still in the Wizard–the fourth page is for selecting a theme. I used BuddyPress Default.
13. I finished the Wizard and Activated BuddyPress.
14. At this point I began getting “Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare()” messages. I ignored them.
15. This error message also appeared. “The following active BuddyPress Components do not have associated WordPress Pages: Activity Streams, User Groups, Members”. You have an option to click Repair, which I did.
16. That took me to BuddyPress -> Pages, which actually shows a total of 6 components (including the three mentioned above) with no associated pages. I opened Pages in a separate tab and created the following pages for each component: Activity Streams, Discussion Forums, User Groups, Members, Register, and Activate. I refreshed BuddyPress -> Pages (to load the drop down menus), associated the appropriate pages, and hit Save All.
17. Then I went to BuddyPress -> Forums. Under “Forums for Groups,” I hit the Install Group Forums button and then hit Complete Installation. I ignored the other option, for site-wide forums.
18. Now I was ready to start Ning Import. I hit Continue under “Ready for blastoff” and I let it do its thing, hitting Continue after each step and keeping any defaults that popped up. I got “Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare()” errors all the way through, sometimes a flood of them, especially during discussions. But I just didn’t care. As long as there wasn’t a fatal error, I kept hitting continue!
19. The process went all the way to the end, when I was given the opportunity to email all my members about the new forum. I clicked out of that.
20. Then I went back to Plugins and finally let BuddyPress update itself to the latest version (1.9). The “Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare()” errors disappeared for good! I could visit my site at that point and see the results. Things looked OK.
21. It was only then that I installed BBPress and followed the codex for migrating BuddyPress forums to BBPress. The migration worked with no problem. BuddyPress installed. BBPress installed. Ning data imported. It’s all good.

I’ll keep playing with my site to see if there are any gotchas.

I sincerely hope others have success with this. It’s messy but for me it was a big step in the right direction!

This plugin only supports import of members.

Any plans to make it work with bbpress to import groups, discussions, etc.?

We have extensively tested and can confirm that it only imports members and blog posts, so we are looking for a fix and not discussion.

I have a fairly large network on Ning and I am in the process of migrating the site to wordpress. I tried your plugin but its not picking up my ning members file. Ning messes up the json on purpose i believe. Is there any fix for that?

Hello everyone!

I am currently in the scary process of moving my social network from NING and onto WordPress/Buddypress.

I am using the plugin ‘Import from NING’ and so far we have successfully imported the members and groups.

Today we have been trying to import the discussions but we get this error – “It looks like you’ve either disabled group forums, or you haven’t set them up correctly. If you don’t plan to use forums, click Continue. Otherwise, ensure that your forum setup is complete, and then return to this page”
We have installed BBPress 2.4.1 and have added a test forum which worked fine.

Can anyone advise on what could be causing the issue and how I can fix it? Really appreciate your time and help.

How would I be able to tell if the file is incorrectly formatted?

I am essentially doing charity work for an organization “Constitution Club” and there are almost 3000 members. I would like to talk to you and see if I can’t just get you to go and take a look under the hood so to say maybe just tune this thing right. Went from Ning to self hosted. The ning importer plugin does very little if it actually shows up, just a heads up incase anyone else is thinking about using it.

Don’t bother.

There doesn’t seem to be any options from converting Ning anymore, other than a plugin at wpmudev that imports the users-only.

I have the same problem as this user!

Iam using the latest version of your Ning-to-Wordpress plugin, the latest version of Buddypress, WP 3.1.1 and use the WhiteHouse theme from Pagelines. My ning-files folder is was FTP’d to the server. My Ning export contains 376 members and a nominal amount of content.
I started the import process. Members imported properly and required a few refreshes. Profiles imported properly.
When the plugin got to the Groups import step, it hangs. The text message instructs me to hit refresh a few times and click the “Continue” button. There is no Continue button. As a result, I can’t finish this step and can’t move on to the next step.
The most important thing for me to be able to import into my WP site is the blog posts and their comments.
Your guidance would be greatly appreciated!

The only caveat is DO NOT MODIFY THE MESSAGE YOU SEND TO USERS. I was unable to get it to properly replace the variables with the actual user name and password after I customized it. I’m not the only person who had this problem.

The hardest part of this process is installing the ning archive program which is a real pain (but that is ning’s fault not the author of this terrific plugin)

i need your help

it has been around a week and my web is down cause i have cancelled my ning subscription because i moved to wordpress

Before i did that i tried wordpress using your import to ning plug and it worked and deleted it cause it was just a trial

now when i already cancelled ning and trying to get everything ready in wordpress when i reach the step of importing i get the below error
