I believe Media Cleaner deleted the correct images for my posts, but I found that where I have added images to Categories and Tags (see example page “farming jokes”) the images have disappeared.
They are in the wpmc-trash hierarchy, but I can’t see a way to restore them in Media Cleaner.
Is it:
I’m happy to restore everything in wpmc-trash if that will fix things. I have to admit that I haven’t tried yet, I am one of those rare people who prefer to check before acting in case they make things worse.
Thanks
]]>Hello,
I believe your plugin supports multisite functionality. I was using it to identify unwanted media files on one of my subsites, and everything worked fine until I tried to delete all flagged files. When I attempt to delete them, the plugin shows a loading animation, but the files aren’t actually removed.
I’ve verified that file permissions aren’t an issue—manually deleting a file from the media library worked without any problems. Could you please let me know if there’s any configuration I might be missing? (I haven’t changed any default settings.) Alternatively, could this be related to multisite support compatibility?
]]>I used the Media Cleaner plugin, but it incorrectly flagged the background image of the “Hero – A custom hero block” in wp-admin as unused media.
After running the cleanup, the background image in the “Hero” section was removed and the image itself was deleted. Could the plugin be updated to recognize images from custom blocks like “Hero” or “Product Hero” as in-use media to prevent accident delete?
Thank you.
Is .avif files supported. Also for .jpeg, .png and webp, does it delete all other size versions?
Thanks
hello, i run scan and successfully delete images. And now at some parts eg slider or some categories i add images and after some hours not appeared to the site like i never add them.
I disable the plugin, deleted, delete also the two tables created but still same issue. Every images i add to specific parts on the site auto deleted somehow and not appeared. (but image seems to still exists to the library)
]]>Hello, good morning
I’m looking for help, if it’s possible to detect all the photos that are shown as duplicates (sometimes a photo appears and says +8). Is there a way to leave a photo and delete the remaining copies?
And another question, why does it appear as if it were there? It appears: Not found in content and if I click on the link, they are posts.
world2023/02/world.svg (+ 10 files)Not found in content13985.16 KB
These posts are broken, could it be?
Thanks for the help, greetings,

This is a help topic to anyone who has had issues with images that are in use, being accidentally deleted. The plugin is fantastic, and this is in no way criticism of the plugin. Rather some helpful info.
SITUATION: I had a WooCommerce site that we ran MEDIA CLEANER plugin on that found over 50,000+ unused images for a very large store with over 10,000 products. I did a backup, ran the scanner, ran the deletion process (which put them into the ‘trash’), spot checked for missing images, and everything appeared fine.
Came to discover the following were missing:
1. Site logo: any images you upload and use in your theme are a potential risk for deletion. Ensure you have a backup.
2. Slider revolution images: Images that were used in slider revolution were accidentally deleted. Moving forward I am going to ensure to export a copy of all sliders for easy restoration if needed.
3. Previously migrated product images: This particular store was originally using a different shopping cart system some years ago, and was migrated over using a service to WooCommerce. Those images from the migration were placed into /wp-content/uploads/cm/ folder that the migration team created. Even though they were used by the products, the plugin still didn’t recognize them as being in use. So I had to grab a backup to restore of that /cm/ folder to resolve.
In this case I don’t blame the plugin, as its most likely the past migration team missed some important record that normally happens when its uploaded via product edit screen.
I hope this information helps some people moving forward. When then plugin warns you to ensure you do a backup first, absolutely do so :). At the very least, ensure you have a backup of your logo, sliders, and if you migrated from another system, verify if the images are in a custom folder and if so ensure to back that up too.

It doesn’t look super serious, but the warnings don’t go away (visible on reload of the page) so it is annoying ??
]]>Hello, just to let you know that after uninstalling the plugin, two orphaned database tables (mclean_refs and mclean_scan) will remain in the WordPress database. They should be deleted automatically upon uninstall.
]]>My site has over 2,500 images and on my previous host, I’m not sure what happened but somehow I ended up with 7 image sizes instead of 3. The reality is far worse than that though as I just discovered by browsing the media using file manager, many of the images actually have up to 42 copies!!!
There are multiple copies of each image size, in JPG and WEBP. Not sure it is was Smush or Optimole or some other image optimisation that caused this, but as you can imaging my media library is now HUGE.
I’m hoping that Media Cleaner will be able to deal with this ok. Speed doesn’t worry me as I’m not doing a lot of site maintenance, but I am looking to move host in the next month and would like to clean things up before then.
I’m going to take a backup of my site, which I know will be huge, but any advice on the best wat to approach the cleanup would be appreciated.
]]>Dear Jordy Meow,
Media Cleaner is making a great job. However Is it possible to speed up the “Deleting” phase?
For the moment we have “There are?53611 issues?with your files, accounting for?12500.86 MB. Your trash contains?355.10 MB.” Moving to trash is beeing done about one picture per second. Too slow having into account the amount of pictures we need to delete.
We have checked the “advanced settings” and all seems at maximum speed. The server has resources.
Thank you.
]]>Hi guys, is it possible to delete the unused thumbnails without the original file?
I’m referring to this option available in the Regenerate thumnails plug-in by Viper007Bond:
Delete thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes in order to free up server space. This may result in broken images in your posts and pages.
I want to delete the thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes in order to free up server space using your both plugins – media cleaner and perfect images. Is that possible?
]]>Looking at my browser console and the rest.php file the /update_options endpoint is called by JS as GET but in the code is specified as POST so I can’t save the options and I think that the error is there also for other endpoints.
I can’t read the JS code as it is obfuscated to see where is the error.
]]>So if the rest api aren’t working the counter is still working.
I noticed because after 23 hours it was still progress so I opened the developer tools in the browser and noticed the error.
My 10-12 year old website has a lot of images that are no longer used, probably numbering in the hundreds. I need to reduce the size of my media file to comply with my webhost’s requirements. Is Media Cleaner the plugin I’m looking for to help me weed out all the images that are no longer used on any pages?
]]>I do not want the background images in a element or column in Elementor in my media cleaner (Pro) scan. I want to keep those images. It is very difficult to check a very big site so that’s why I do not want these images in my scan. What can I do?
]]>Good Day,
Perhaps it’s only happening to us, but we noticed that if we navigate to another WP backend page while the Media Cleaner scanner is running (and say, it’s already at 70% complete), the scanner stops completely. When we restart the scanner, it doesn’t remember anything. The scanner re-starts at 0%.
Above is either a bug or something that needs to be fixed via a plugin enhancement. Meanwhile:
Cheers!
]]>Hello!
I have many pages already accumulated in this tab but I don’t know exactly what they mention. Are they the tags that link the images I already have to the products? Or is it something residual from what I have already deleted that I can remove?
]]>Hi!! I have a problem with Media Cleaner, I tried to use it in my simulation website but when I run it, it just keeps running without giving any results or media to analyze (tough I have many duplicate files) for more than 2 hours.
Could you help me out please? Would appreciate any tips on how to fix it
]]>Hello,
On my site, there are three languages managed by WPML and I import my product data using WP All Import. In the initial imports, we made the mistake of importing the product images repeatedly, and by the time we realized the site had become significantly slower, it was too late to easily remove the excess images.
We tested your plugin, Media Cleaner, and had a lot of trouble getting it to complete step 4 (it kept stopping). At one point, we managed to get it to display the images it had found before crashing, and we saw that there were supposedly more than 88GB of images (although the site should not have more than 68GB, so we didn’t fully understand).
However, to permanently delete these images (only 140,000 were found), it informed us that it would take 2.5 hours for every 1,000 images. This is far too long to be viable.
Is there any way we can help the program, for example by deleting images from the site folders beforehand?
Thank you in advance.
]]>I’ve used WordPress for close to twenty years, yet after installing this plugin looking at the settings, I somehow am not even seeing a button that starts a cleaning process. Maybe I missed something, I know I will read the tutorial? Oops that link cannot be found.
First impressions matter, and I’ve got nothing to show for spending my time installing a “free” plugin that appears to be a bait for an upgrade.
Grrrrrrr.

]]>Great plugin! Thank you so much for your work on this. Is it possible to have it recognize images used in the Advanced Ads plugin? After running a test on a staging server, it trashed advertising images because they were not connected to a post.
]]>I did the scan and it returned all my images. Does the free version not detect images added with the WPBakery page builder?
]]>As an admin I can see the Media Cleaner. Looking at the Advanced Access management plugin I can see that the editor role has the capability ‘manage_media_cleaner’. But if we login as an editor we don’t see the Media Cleaner option and access is denied if we access the URL directly.
]]>We are using a powerful AWS server, but have over 50,000+ media entries in multiple languages using WPML. Our scan will climb to 1448 hours and be at about 18% before I either move locations or need to jump wifi networks (or some other unforseen circumstance) before the entire scan must need to be restarted.
Is there a manner for batch processing or can you please provide a recommendation in this regard?
]]>Hello Team,
I am facing an issue with the plugin I want to remove the unused media images from my site
on scanning the media folder by plugin it scans the unused images but it treats the images uploaded on the ACF as unused
If I delete the unused images then it will delete the images uploaded in the ACF as well
can you please take a look into this?
I used wpvivid to create a staging site and then tried to run media cleaner scan but it didn’t seem to want to scan. Any thoughts on this? I’d like to be able to test this on a staging site so I can see exactly what happens when I delete images.
]]>Hi there
I tried to clean up images that are not being used anymore. I am running a real estate listing platform, hence there are thousands of old images that are not used anymore.
But Media Cleaner tags most of my active images as not found in content although they are used in the listing. For instance, all sliding images following the main image of all listings on the main page, get removed.
Also images used as dynamic category content images are being deleted.
Please advise me how I could usefully use this plugin.
Thanks
]]>Hi, I ran this on the site https://www.ilfracombecarlton.co.uk/
I know there are hundreds of images that are not used but when I ran the scan it did not locate a single one. I am using Divi Builder if that makes a difference?
