If you attach media to posts in the standard WP way, this plugin is very reliable.

I have used the free version for a week and optimized 3 sites. I have images on WC shops and blog pages. Plugin reduced my main site from 3.79GB to 2.09GB, other sites similarly. I used only default settings, didn’t do any customizing. The user interface is clear and intuitive, not crowded. After optimizing images were active in shops and blog and all intact as needed. After optimizing also checked optimized images within my caching plugin (WPFC), all were intact as needed. The only thing I had to repair – the favicon image (what displays logo on browser’s tab) was lost and I had to upload it again. So, excellent job!

If you have a wordpress website long enough, you know that images add to your space quickly, especially if you have lots of thumbnails being generated. After all those thumnails are created, you end up only using 1 version most of the time. This Media Cleaner plugin has done a great job removing all those unwanted images. My servers are not very fast but this plugin includes throttle settings so you dont overload your server with processes. Very Cool! I have not found another plugin that does anything like this. It works and keep my hosting storage lower which is my #1 priority. Thanks!

I use the free version to delete product images where no more products exist.
WooCommerce runs with about 45000 products which are updated daily and new images are added weekly.
This often causes problems when deleting products, as the images remain in the media folder and quickly take up hundreds of GB of memory.
The plugin finds and deletes the corresponding images.
I will purchase the Pro version, as I currently have to do everything manually with the free version, but this works without any problems.

I’ve been using Media Cleaner for several months now, and I’m absolutely thrilled with its functionality and user-friendliness. It has helped me clean up my WordPress media library and remove unnecessary files, which saves storage space and improves my website’s loading times. What I love about it:
Conclusion:
Media Cleaner is an essential tool for any WordPress user who wants to keep their site clean and efficient. The regular updates and excellent support make it a worthwhile investment. Highly recommended!

I tried out the free version of Media Cleaner on my WordPress website, and here’s what happened.
What I Love: The best part about Media Cleaner is that it helps me find pictures and files on my website that I no longer need. It’s like having an intelligent helper who goes through all my stuff and tells me. This made my website faster and much less crowded, with old pictures just sitting there doing nothing.
What I was not too fond of : But sometimes, the accessible version of Media Cleaner doesn’t find every single place where a picture is used, especially if it’s hidden in something tricky or special on my website. This made me nervous because I didn’t want to delete something important accidentally. So, I had to be extra careful and check twice before deleting anything.
Overall: Overall, Media Cleaner is excellent and helpful for cleaning up my website. Double-check before you delete anything, and you’ll be ready!

Just remember to only work on a backup of your site, staging, or local. Given that WP only lists images as in use if they are “attached” it’s a tricky thing indeed to determine which images are used and which are not. From what I see, this plugin does a pretty decent job of determining that. Nice interface and quick to return results.

There aren’t many alternatives to compare to but most websites I trust recommended this one and it does the job well

Thanks for this. I needed a one time “house clean” for a WP install used for customer reports going back to 2015, and while simple to just whack stuff via FTP; that doesn’t scrub the media view in WP. This did the hard whack I needed and then just FTP’d back the 10 images out of 5200 I actually needed ?? WOO! Thanks!

This plugin is a life saver for websites where editors don’t clean up as they go…

Media Cleaner is the only option I know of that can scan my site and find unused media that can be deleted to save storage space on server. I wish I knew this was available sooner as it is a great solution. You do have to be careful that it does not delete images that are in page builders, but I found that the Pro version does a great job of resolving that issue. The free version should be good with Classic or Gutenburg.

It′s a pity that I don′t remember the hero that pointed me in the direction of this truly awesome FREE plugin.
Use it for years now for a particular type of clients: the ones happily uploading all their media in bulk – use only some of them and never look back.
At some point we have to upgrade their hosting plan. We know the question coming after telling this.
Why? It′s a small website – I did not change anything – etc.
Have a look at your Media Library my dear
Oh I See all uploads but I dont need all that images. Can′t you just delete the unused ones for me?
Nope..
I can select ¨unattached files¨ in WordPress but that does not give a clue if you bulk uploaded before and/or if you use that images in other places.
But: I do have a tip for you!
We can install a nice FREE plugin that checks out you Media library, and for every image that seams not to be in use on your website, you get a list with a nice little preview thumbnail & the name of the file to help you remember if you need that image to stay in you Library.
This is something you can do to help you:
So clients go through their files, also having a moment to update their blogs, filenames and helping their SEO as a bonus.
The only thing we do for them because we know : people do not read anymore, so they do miss warnings. We backup the whole website before we send the advice.

This plugin worked perfectly. No trouble with the install and the interface was very easy to use.
It helped find gigabytes of old images that we weren’t using any more. We were even able to downgrade our hosting storage plan to save money every month! Not a bad result for a free plugin:D

Very user friendly and clean interface. I wish the bots could be css of the interface. This is just an idea. ty

It is very useful in removing unused media.
Normally it takes hours to remove media I use, and in many cases I either deleted something that is in use, or it happen that I did not catch all unused media.
With this plugin, these unused media is placed in my deleted folder, which I can delete later or restore if I need it later.
However, it would be helpful if you can place a function where unused media is placed in a bacup folder instead of placing it in the deleted folder.

It worked great!
It did fail with some images from a custom carousel, but that is expected – how the plugin can know how some random carousel stores the data about the images, and there are thousands of carousels.. Just re-uploaded the images back and that’s it – all clean and working!

I have a hobby site that been running on WordPress for 10 years. Over time I’ve had multiple themes and plugins that have been ditched as WordPress evolved.
I use two of Jordy’s tools to clean up the site:
Meow Media Cleaner and Meow Database Cleaner.
Both have allowed me to remove years of crud that have built up over time.
Both are VERY powerful tools.
Don’t take short-cuts. Read the tutorials. MOST IMPORTANT take (regular) back-up in case you delete something that is important and you need to roll-back. Having made the changes its also important to scroll though your site t discover if by accident you removed something that is important.
My mantra in deleting – even if its suggested as something to be removed, If I don’t recognise it – I do not to delete and review it on the second or third pass.

As a freelance web developer, I’ve used Media Cleaner on several client WordPress sites to help optimize their media libraries. Overall, it’s an extremely useful plugin that can save a ton of storage space and improve site performance.
The scanning algorithm is quite good at detecting truly unused media files. I love how it checks not just posts and pages, but also widget areas, menus, and theme files. The ability to filter results and perform test runs before deleting anything permanently is also great.
However, I do have to caution users to be very careful with this plugin. On one occasion, it flagged some images as unused that were actually dynamically loaded via a custom plugin. Luckily I caught this during the preview stage. So while Media Cleaner is powerful, you need to have a solid understanding of how your WordPress site utilizes media files before bulk deletion!

I’ve used Media Cleaner a few times and find it quite useful. The only downside is that it will identify an image that is in use on a page. It’s no big deal, and it’s easy enough to replace the image, but irritating. Other than that, it’s easy enough to use, the UI is easy to understand, and it is quite rapid.

I’ve been using the Media Cleaner plugin, and I couldn’t be happier with it! Unlike other similar plugins, Media Cleaner not only works flawlessly but also checks different plugins to ensure everything is in order. I recently purchased the Pro version, and it has exceeded my expectations. Kudos to the dev team for creating such an excellent tool!

Was looking for a plugin to clean my media library and finally settled for this after trying several others. It is arguably the best.

I’ve been using this plugin for years now. It is the best and I recommend it especially if you need to clean your server’s disk, to pay less to store your site on the web.

This plugin is full of little popups begging you not to give it a bad review if it just happens to not be very good at what it’s supposed to do. Well sorry guys, but this is a terrible plugin. It’s a nice idea to scan media you’re using and media you’re not and delete the latter, but the problem is there are so many ways you can be using media that it’s just not sensitive to, and so it’s a hard to imaging a single site where it won’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, with disastrous effects, deleting lots of media that you’re using or linking to. For example, it deletes PDFs links via custom fields. It deletes images when they are the background of an element. Of course you need to backup before you use it – and it rightly warns you to do so – but you shouldn’t have to assume a plugin will destroy your site and be making plans for when it inevitably does. Backups are meant for emergencies. The work involved in fixing a site afterwards is intense.

Pretty easy to use. Gives a preview of images to delete so one can doublecheck it.
