ONLY USED TO DELETE ALL THUMBNAILS, STILL WORKS HERE: /wp-admin/tools.php?page=optimize-images-resizing
BUT IF SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO THE SAME THING, THIS COMMAND ALSO WORKS:
cd /home/example/public_html/wp-content/uploads
find . -regextype posix-extended -regex “.*-:digit:{2,4}x:digit:{2,4}(@2x)?.(jpg|jpeg|png|eps|gif)” -type f -exec rm {} \;

This plugin is awesome even in 2021! I wish I knew about it sooner and that the developer would continue to update it. Works fine though for 3 sites I installed it on.

Why it generate all sizes if I have requested only 100 on 100 pixel.
For example I have 20 different sizes.
For post example with id 21 I use featured image.
On the front page I have custom template which use featured img for post 22 with size 100 on 100. Why it generate all other 19 sizes? I dont use for this img all other, just 100 on 100.

This plugin cleans all unused images. In my case, it removes about 2850 images (based on my web reports)
With just one click cleaned unused images. It works very well
BTW, I use it with regenerate thumbnails for better results
Love this plugin!!

This is a really well thought out plugin. It cleans up all the clutter that WordPress leaves behind when you change themes or adjust layouts.
In our case, our installation was creating 20 different thumbnail sizes. This plugin just saved us 50% of our disk usage.
Thanks for a great tool!

It’s great, this plugin does not delete the wrong image and it works really well.
The size of my website has dropped from 498MB to 416MB after using this plugin to delete the overloaded images.

Very effective plugin! Removed a lot of generated image sizes that were not used at all but were included in the daily (off server) backup. Saves a lot of time, space and bandwidth.

Hello. Thanks for your code!
One question:
public function image_downsize($out, $id, $size) {
// we don't handle this
if ( is_array( $size ) ) return false;
Why not?
For using: image_downsize($id, [200, 200])
Again – thanks.

Should be the standard in WordPress config. Thanks a lot!

This works perfectly and is a life saver for big websites with lot of images and inodes usage shared hosting restrictions.
This should be core wordpress feature, I mean what’s the point to have 15 image sizes that your theme does not really use.
I don’t know exactly what sizes my theme template really uses, but this plugin finds automatically what is needed for display and removes the rest.
Most importantly, because it generates image size only on request, the resized images are affecting only the featured images (which are often requested at different sizes) and not my post images. Previously every single image in the post content would have 15 sizes, which would never going to be used because they were not featured.This fact alone saves the day for me.
Am I going to need more sizes for mobile visitors for the post content images? Probably yes, let the plugin handle only the absolute minimum required each time.

Unique functionality, works well ! [5/5]
Be sure you understand what his plugin will do before you use it – I think it offers unique functionality that I have not seen in any other plugin.
I ran this on several small sites and it worked perfectly – removing a few hundred images and about 100MB in space.
This was as a test for my older, larger site – 5 years old, 300 pages, image heavy, lots of plugins and functionality.
Cleanup was successfully completed. Number of images removed: 10287. totaling 1.2GB ! (as per my cPanel usage stats).
However, one small thing did break – my Fullwidth Portfolio as slider (Divi WP theme) – strangely about half of the thumbnails disappeared from the front end slider. I went in to each project to edit/resave (all images were OK) but this did not fix. But no big deal – I just spent a few mins removing the fullwidth slider from my site, and will develop a new way of doing the same thing (as even re-creating the slider does not successfully pull in these missing thumbs.
So, a cautious recommendation, backup first, and you should be happy with the result.
Thanks for the great plugin, OriginalEXE. 5/5

Shouldn’t be necessary, but this plugin is removing an annoying WordPress problem. Why is Wordpess/template-makers taking the liberty and making 3-4 copies of my images and use those images instead of my carefully cropped and resized original image? Well, this plugin solves that problem. Thanks!

I’ve been using this plugin for a loooong time, but never bothered to write a review. It is an awesome one. Deserves a lot more attention than it has. There are 2 guys that wrote on a forum once: “I’d pay $50 for that right now.” Then the other guy made a research and found this plugin, and then told to the 1st guy about it.
Dunno if the guys every donated. I will when my site starts earning.

This plugin is shooting yourself in the foot if your site has lots of images and lots of hits all the time. All sorts of sizes will be requested all the time and your server will struggle to process the regeneration live. Mine is a Quad Core Xeon E3-1246 v3 @ 3.50GHz with 16 GB ram still it’s been hours with big loads trying to regenerate what this plugins removes. There’s a reason why wordpress does it once on upload and not upon request. It’s a very bad idea.
I don’t see any scenario when this would be a good idea, when you start getting hits lots of images will begin recreating at the same time and it will kill the server. I can’t imagine what it would do to a VPS/shared host.
And advertising “no performance hit” is false. Regenerating many images alt the same time increase load and slow down the site.

I just found out that the theme of I site I manage or some plugins created like 20 sizes of each photo… and if i cropped the photo: another 20 files popped up.
The server of this site was running over with unneeded files. One clicke on a button an there went 130MB of files! And the site still works as before.
Thanks!!

hi i really don’t know if this plugins work… there is no log file that can tell you how much space they clean up and which file they cleaned?
if they have a log file, how can i see it?
thank you in advance!

Absolutely seamless, cleanup got rid of 5,000 out of 12,000 images. Haven’t yet tried new uploads with it, but so far so good.
(HINT: there is no configuration page for this plugin, the only evidence of its installation is the cleanup button under Settings/Media.)
Small critique: the printed language text in the plugin is just a little kinky in spots — could use a native-English proofread/edit.

Well done. Works as it’s mentioned in description. It removes almost 11000 unnecessary jpeg images which were created by WordPress. Saved alot of memory on server. Thank you!
Btw. this should be a feature of WordPress, not a plugin.
