Hi Vicky,
We corresponded a year ago or so in this forum, where you helped me develop some code for my child function file. It hooked into wp_head and forced Facebook shares to use an image of the author that was inserted into the post by a plugin called Post Avatar, if there were no featured images. It also tested the featured image to see if it was large enough for Facebook (200px), and if not, and there were no author image, it showed the default image for the site.
It worked great for a long time, but for some reason, with the latest WordPress, it stopped working properly, and now, unless there’s an author image, only the default image gets shared, not the featured image.
I wonder if you can help me again? I could send you the code as it is, so you could look it over.
When looking at Facebook’s ‘scraped’ info on their debugger, the featured image IS listed as an og:image, but it uses the default image every time anyway, which is listed last. So, maybe it just takes the last image listed. I wonder if there’s a way to prevent the default image from being included in the og:image list, if there’s a qualified featured image or author image. That may solve the problem.
I’ve tried coming up with an ‘if’ statement to do that, but it’s not working.
I hope you can come to my rescue again. Thank you!
P.S. I hope you’ll either work this code into your plugin, or created a new one as a supplement to Post Avatar.
The Post Avatar pics have been disappearing from saved posts since the recent WP update.
This is very disconcerting, as we have many authors on our site, with many articles posted for each, and it would take a LOT of time to go back and re-save the articles with the Post Avatars reinserted.
They do seem to stay once you re-save them, however.
Could you provide a script by any chance, or update the plugin, to reinsert the avatars somehow?
Thanks for any help.
I’m using a function added to my child theme’s function.php file for the purpose of adding the Post Avatar image to Facebook’s required meta property og:image list in the url.
The code was suggested in this forum exchange, and I used it and it worked. However, I just noticed that when there is no Post Avatar on the page, it leaves a line like this:

…and Facebook doesn’t like that. Their debugger says:
Errors That Must Be Fixed
Object Missing a Required Value Object at URL ‘https://www.humortimes.com/34003/humor-times-founder-editor-to-appear-on-radio-paralax-show-april-2nd/’ of type ‘article’ is invalid because a required property ‘og:image:url’ of type ‘url’ was not provided.
What can I do to address this? Can I add an ‘else’ statement to the function, so that if there is no avatar, there’s a default image to use?
It would be great if Post Avatar could generate a meta property=”og:image” line in the url for the image.
This is for the “Open Graph protocol” used in Facebook to decide what images to choose from when people share the post.
Sometimes in a post, there are no other images, other than the Post Avatar image, so it should be included in the Open Graph protocol.
How can we make sure that is generated? Is there any simple code we can add to do this?
Thanks for any help.
