We use the SimpleTOC plugin to display a table of contents for longer articles in our WordPress blog. We also use an Easy Accordion plugin to create FAQs, which are based on Gutenberg Blocks.

Unfortunately, even though the Easy Accordion block has an H2 header, it’s not being picked up in the TOC. Any suggestions? I’m also checking with Easy Accordion for a solution.

The following issue has started with WP 6.6.1.

When a Heading within the page is contained within a Group block, the heading is detected and output within the TOC block on the front end, but clicking on that item does not trigger the scroll to that particular heading. It actually appears to scroll back to the page title instead.

An interesting observation is that when you mouse over the link, you can see the /#heading fragment is indeed added to the URL, but when clicked, the scroll doesn’t occur (it scrolls to the top of the page) and the /#heading fragment is not present in the browser address bar. Manually typing the /#heading fragment to the address bar does trigger the scroll to the heading to occur as required. All other headings that are not themselves within Group blocks continue to behave as normal in all regards.

In the page link I’ve provided, the “Quality Assurance” heading is the one on this particular page that is within a Group block.

Hoping this is something that won’t be too troubling to fix. Thanks for looking.

since the update to Word Press 6.6.1 the plugin no longer works for me (only in the backend). As soon as I want to integrate the table of contents into an article or I open an existing article where the table of contents is integrated, the browser crashes. I have tested it with Firefox and Chrome (both browsers are up to date).

I downgraded back to WordPress 6.5.5. and everything works fine here.

Can anyone help?

Hi, we are using the WPML. Some posts has final verdict section as a conclusion. This section has a title which is in English is “Final Verdict”. We add this title to a post with reusable pattern (translated to each language). And as you see it is translated in a post, but in TOC it is still in English. Any ideas?

Using the Rankmath FAQ block, it is possible to choose for the question title from H2 to H6, P & Div. I’ve set the questions to h2, but they are not shown in the TOC.

The first title in the RM FAQ block is

Maybe I will need some CSS to reduce left and bottom margins, but the most important thing for me is the automatic translation of the heading text. My site is de/en/it and I see that actually the following automatic titles are defined: Inhaltsverzeichnis / Table of Contents / Indice. Where can I change it? I would like to use Inhalt / Contents / Indice

we started to use the TOC plugin and it works well. Scrolling didn’t work in the beginning because of the delay JS execution in WP Rocket. After deactivating it works again. However it is not possible to edit the poc (indent / outdent / bullet / numeric). That all doesn’t work.

Hi Marc,
I love to automate as much as I can, and have the possibility to add dynamic tags to my pages as well. When your plugin is active, the dynamic tags on the pages stop working. I have a created a short video to demonstrate that.

PS to see my website, click the lock on the bottom right, and then type hello. My new site is not a secret, but I put this in front to prevent Google from indexing it while I am building.

I’d love to see an option in this plugin to use a <details> tag instead of the JS for the accordion as well as a class attached to it so it can be styled.

Love the plugin but how do I code the CSS so that the title text changes color when hovered? I tried this:

but instead I get the same white color text over a light grey background instead of the title text going to black. Appreciate the help in coding. Tried chatgpt but the above was what I got that isn’t working.

If you notice that the “scroll to top” speed is sluggish, review your SimpleTOC block and ensure that you deactivate “Smooth scrolling support” to eliminate the speed issue.

I am finding an H2 is appearing as ‘Hello World’ in the TOCs (see page example). I have checked with GeneratePress and they say is not caused by their end and to touch base with the Simple TOC team.

Just wondering if you can spot why this might be?

I’m struggling a little with validation of the unordered list, as it appears to output different number of li and /li tags.

My editor counts 8 li and 7 /li

While browsers are forgiving and the TOC renders, it does throw errors in automated tests like in CodePen or Checkbot

Please let me know if I can do anything to help troubleshoot.

First of all thanks for the plugin. It has replace all the others ????

And here is my request:

• When a document is saved, the ToC is recalculated.
• During that time the ToC is replaced with a progress icon.
• The different height of the ToC results in a jump that on long pages is rather noticeable.
• When the cursor is down on the page every save is annoying as sometimes you lose track of the cursor while the page is jumping.

I was about to file an issue with the Gutenberg block editor when I realized that this only occurs when a SimpleTOC block is in place.

Of course I could add the ToC later on just before publishing, but I sometimes work for days or weeks on a long post and the links of the ToC are helpful while working on it. In the editor for copying and pasting internal links, in the frontend for jumping around the content.

So if there is way to preserve the size of the ToC while the document is saved that would be much appreciated.

Can we have in a future update a way to set default settings of the new blocks?

I have a set configuration for my TOC block, and i have to modify it exactly the same on each blog post i have. So it will be a great time saver and a mistake saver as well to have a default setting.

I’m using this great TOC for my technical articles (posts).

When editing a longer post in Gutenberg editor, the block keeps rendering all the time, making the edit experience quite laggy and annoying. The page content also keeps jumping around vertically.

It would be a great improvement to have a toggle “Don’t render in Gutenberg” either in the existing “Advanced Features” meta box of the block, or as a global setting in Settings > SimpleTOC.

SimpleTOC is quite easy to set up as the name implies, and on the Edit page everything looks good. But when I view the published page on a phone or computer there are two TOCs.

One is smaller and is like a widget I can click to expand, and the sections are numbered.

The other one, which appears to be the only one I can see in the Edit page, looks just like bullet points. I can enable the accordion drop down and edit this one.

But on the published page it shows both. Ideally I would just like to keep the second one.

Is there a way to hide the heading text if the content is empty? Some of our posts don’t have the H2 and H3 blocks that we use to generate the TOC – but the heading text still appears.

Hey Marc, Thanks for your great TOC plugin! Can I impose on your with two questions?

1. I am using GP Pro. If I want absolute flexibility to change the style of TOC in the future, would I be best to set up a Global Style and then a Local Pattern containing a TOC and then place that wherever I want a TOC?
2. Just placing it on a page as a test, I found a slightly odd behaviour. If I tap it opens (great) and if I tap to close it closes perfectly (great) but after closing, if I mouse away on desktop the background changes to a solid colour which is in keeping with my theme, but oddly, the ‘Table of Contents’ wording is hidden. Mouse back over and the background changes to gray (preferred), and the wording ‘Table of Contents’ is visible again. I experienced this also on mobile once but then it seemed to work fine thereafter. Just wondering why that might be?
3. I gather there is no way to change padding/ indentation on mobile? I am finding the contents could be a little less indented than presently.
4. In what situation/reason would I use Force absolute urls Adds the permalink url to the fragment.”? Is this a benefit for SEO or other reason?

For some reason the plugin adds “h-” in front of all heading ids on a page which is then used by simple toc to create links like “#h-the-heading”

Is there a setting I’m missing somewhere that controls this behavior? the id should just be the heading text, but seems to be adding extra characters.
