]]>Love the idea of this plugin and it appears that you are still actively developing this one ! KUDOS.
Here is something I am wondering about: Could this plugin also be used to create blogs (Multisite environment), for the Avatar that “signs” up ?
Also: on the online indicator, to bad that you stopped working on that one, maybe a version that can pull the online status of each group member would be an awesome feature ? — just thinking ??
Hi,
My apologies for leaving the forums unattended for so long.
A few people reported (by email) some bugs, beyond those mentioned here. One was a simple fix, for those who don’t have php.ini with short_open_tags set to on.
The email issue is a bit more complex (it requires more LSL to deal with an extra dialogue box to ask for the user’s email, etc.). Email addresses could also be captured in chat. I think that the newer SL viewers now allow things to be typed on a dialogue box, but I have to experiment. Anyway, I always thought that people would go to their profiles and change the password, because the default one is (deliberately) random nonsense — and if they do so, changing the email address on the profile is much easier than doing it in-world in SL ??
BuddyPress integration seems… tricky! Now I’ll confess that I developed this plugin to integrate with an experimental BuddyPress-based project, which, however, was left in stand-by (I simply cannot commit to so many projects at the same time!). So I actually tested this plugin on several different sites (specially because of the issue with WP MU) but not on my intended BuddyPress install! What seems to happen is that BuddyPress adds a lot of redirections based on the user’s name (and not on the username) and this can get a bit more confusing that way!
I did add some extra validation for “wrong” usernames. Usernames with dots are absolutely valid for WP. Nevertheless, BuddyPress might be “overriding” the valid usernames (which I learned that it’s possible to do!). So now the plugin checks first if the username with dots is valid. If not, it registers the username with underscores. This gets checked again, just in case a specific WP install doesn’t like underscores, either. If the username validation fails, the avatar doesn’t get registered and just gets an error.
However, when testing it with my own BuddyPress install, BuddyPress accepts usernames with dots without problems. Then it fails to do the required redirects. Why, I don’t know; I’m not familiar with BuddyPress and still learning how to do plugins for it (it’s so much different from WordPress!). Eventually, with luck, I might find out what strange “magic” BuddyPress is doing with its redirections, but, for now, this plugin is not really compatible with BuddyPress ?? Sorry ??
All I can say is that you can get a “conversation” blog using WordPress and the P2 Theme from Automattic. For some of you, this might be a good alternative to using BuddyPress, since P2 provides some of the key functionality of BuddyPress (timelines, discussions, the equivalent of forums… think Twitter meets IRC) without the extra millions of features. But I understand that for some full BuddyPress support is really, really needed. Aw, I do apologise for that. I’ll be looking into it, I promise!
]]>Great work. Love this plugin. I’m able to register avies from SL on my site but when the user goes to edit their profile the link doesn’t work. It might be because of the dot between the first and last name. I changed the function to put a dash but that didn’t help. The edit profile link seems to truncate the display name and remove the dot or space. Kind of hard to explain. Maybe this will start a conversation.
