I am using WordPress version 6.1.1. The plugin correctly cleared all thumbnails (24 thousand in a few minutes). Despite the fact that the plugin has not been updated for a long time, it still works well. I thank the developer.

Follow the instructions and it will work like a charm. I used this plugin on a 5.5 GB uploads folder containing 49193 images. Thanks, author!

I have been looking for this plugin functionality a long time, so I’m really satisfied

Some sort of that have been already mentioned by “imagophilos”. It has broken my icomoon icons and took me some hours to investigate what is the reason of that.

It works great!

“When I analyze or press clean all thumbnails(even after try splitting up the uploaded files), the browser is refresh but the panel is blank and does not delete anything from the server.”I’m really waiting to fix it.
Great tool and Good Idea but Bad Realization, SO FAR I BELIEVE)) Thank you for your work, and good luck to you.
P.S Sorry for my English. It will be great if you correct my mistakes

I don’t like leaving bad reviews but I think it’s important here since the author has not acknowledged the shortcomings on the description page.
In short, this plugin will timeout and throw up a 503 error if you have several thousand images in your uploads folder, making the plugin non-functional. I’ll edit the review if it begins using AJAX to avoid timeouts.

I was not able to do a successfull backup but understand this is in progress. I was not afraid to delete all thumbnails as it is easy to regenerate them. Also I moved all images to cloudinary.com so I really just needed this to clean up local files. Cloudinary does a great job of delivering thumbnails. And I just left the original images on the server just in case things go wrong.

Thank you very much for this helpful plugin. The plugin is very useful if thumbnail sizes change with a theme change or similar (especially if the site has a great number of images). It’s only one click to delete all thumbnails and another to regenerate new thumbnails. I really hope the developer won’t be discouraged by the one star ratings from users who are not able to cope with site specific problems. Nobody should rate one star without asking for help first. Thank you very much for this great plugin, which saved me a lot of time and helped to clean up server space by removing thumbnails that are not used anymore.

Never wrote a review on WP, but this time I have to. The plugin looked good, reviews were decent. I tried it on a woocommerce site, around 3k images. First the backup creation did not work (although I max out out resources on a decent server), memory errors.
Had a prior backup anyway so I hit the clean button. Afterwards… total chaos with the images. Some disappeared, others became skewed. Hit regenerate, but to no avail. Cleared cache, flushed dns etc. Some images dont show up in the media library anymore, others just show the broken link icon on the front end. Had I not done the full backup of a production ready site, I now would have to upload the images again.
I’m not sure whether I did something terribly wrong, but it doesn’t matter. A plugin that works with your upload folder should really be fool proof. This just cost me some hours of extra work and stress. Sorry guys.

Although, I run into a memory problem trying to make the picture backup, I proceeded as I had a very recent backup of the whole site. This is the only reason I give it only 4 stars.
The plugin did what I needed! My site has gone many changes since 2006 and had amassed sooo many thumbnails that the backups were gigantic.
Thanks so much !

Found your plug-in and tried it, but I got a fatal error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 51582823 bytes) in /home/nbd610/public_html/wp-content/plugins/thumbnail-cleaner/classes/thumbnail-cleaner.php on line 82
I saw on another thread that someone had a large amount of files to process but it didn’t go. I think I might have a similar amount: 47160 files (1,258.89 MB) after I ran the analyzer.
What would I need to do to allow this to work? I’d really like to take advantage of this, and I see it’s helped others.

Within WP 4.6 used Version 1.4.1. The actual uploads folder cleaned and thinned down 70% of the size. Simply great! Thanks for this neat, handy, and easy to use plugin!

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class Thumbnail_Cleaner in /home1/xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/wp-content/plugins/thumbnail-cleaner/includes/classes.php on line 19

I really appreciate thaikolja for his hardwork developing this useful plugin for everyone. It helped me save 50% storage in my “uploads” folder and free me from thoudsands of theme-generated-thumbnail.
As thaikolja already said, there is a tiny problem with the plugin 1.40 activation. In order to get rid of it, you just simply delete the “thumbnail-cleaner.php” in both “admin” and “classes” folder in your installation plugin folder: “\\wp-content\plugins\thumbnail-cleaner”.

I thought this plugin didn’t work, but i rechcked settings and it worked great. Sorry for the one-star rating I gave earlier.

Fantastic utility to reign in excessive image bloat from WordPress. WordPress image management is annoying as hell, especially when you switch themes, etc., which I just did. This literally removed over 8 thousand thumbnails from my installation…WTF. Hit the regenerate button and it regenerated only 1100 or so. Pretty cool. My backup times will improve for sure. Knowing that I had thousands of images was starting to annoy me too so I have been planning a cleanup was was going to manually remove all thumbnails and use the regenerate thumbnail tool to create them. That was before I came across this utility. Seriously man, thank you for saving me hours and hours of time!

It does the job as described. Enough said.

Dealing with the ever growing amount of thumbnail sizes when switching themes or layouts, made backups a burden and just wasn’t “neat”. There are plenty of plugins to regenerate thumbnails, but this is the first plugin I found that would actually clean out the old ones. Thanks!
A few suggestions thaikolja:
a) Simplify the interface, its quite busy.
b) Abandon the backup functionality. Make it absolutely clear that users should perform a backup before removing thumbnails, but line up a few options (all-in-one-migration, duplicator, ftp), and let them do what they do best, so you concentrate on the cleaning up part.
c) check and verify WordPress 4.4 compatibility, and update this plugins description. It seems to work, would be a shame if people abandon it thinking it doesn’t.
Keep up the good work!
