I disabled all widgets and downloaded the export file.
when i try to import the file it gives the error message:
“Import data is invalid.”
]]>Hi,
On this WordPress.com site the Export button generates a CSV instead of a .wie file.
So that it can’t be uploaded as a .wie file, of course.
The issue might be site related and not hosting related: I tried the same (export) on the migrated (similarly staging) version of the same website, and the issue repeated.
Please advise what can be wrong here.
Thank you and kind regards,
Attila

]]>I have read this already, but have a question about it. I appreciate the work plugin developers do to provide free plugins for us. I work for several theme designers and have a lot of clients of my own. These clients are on SiteGround, Bluehost, WPEngine, Flywheel, Hostgator and a lot of other hosting providers. This plugin hasn’t worked to use the upload method in quite some time. We always need to use the copy/paste method, and to be honest, there are a lot of end users who are not tech savvy in this regard to open the file on desktop and then do a copy/paste. At one time this plugin worked brilliantly and over time the function to import the widgets the traditional way was broken and has remained broken. Will there be a real solution to this besides the “copy/paste” approach? Or should we really look for other options to make it easier for end user? Thanks in advance.

I am getting this error while importing the .wie widget file using the plugin
I exported using this plugin

I have unzipped the download for the import/export for widgets.
Now I have a .php file which looks fine to me.
But it is not. I can’t figure out another way to unzip and get a .wie file. I run a small volume website for each election. Now I have been trying off and on for weeks to find a .wie file. I do not get paid. I do this as I can expect no big changes. Now I can no longer change/delete any widget! This includes the one for donations that goes to an old campaign that is closed.
Thank you so much from a blogger who now hates word press plugin makers. & in Word press that “updated” and ruined my website. I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO LEARN ALL THE CRAP THAT I DO NOT NEED SO I CAN TRY TO FIND WHAT I NEED TO KNOW. The election is 33 days from now. I do not have the time and I am fed up. I managed to get rid of Gutenberg — I do not have the time to learn a new way of making what I need. Now I cannot find a way to get rid of the widgets across the bottom. My website is ruined. I have to copy the whole damn thing over to a new website without the widgets at the bottom. I hate this. I do not have time prior to the election.
When I can find the time to learn all kinds of new crap I am switching from WP. Don’t know which to go to but I am sick of having NO CHOICES when these major changes are made. Vistaprint might be the way to go. I don’t like it but if I am stuck I will gladly use it.
Go ahead, be smug that a novice uses WP because it is supposed to be so easy to use for bloggers. Really? Be smug and laugh. There has got to be something better.
Got suggestions??

]]>Do you have some compatibility between old and current version of the plugin?
]]>Hello)
Where can I study your documentation?
Can I import widgets from my old WP installation to the new one with your plugin?
]]>In rare cases, the .wie file type cannot be registered with WordPress. This prevents file uploads from working.
Alternate Import Method
The quickest workaround is to click the copy and paste link below the upload field. A text box will appear for you to copy and paste the contents of your .wie file into. You can open your file in a text editor to copy its contents.
Troubleshooting File Uploads
The above workaround is suitable in most situations. If you want to troubleshoot the file upload import method then try the following.
1. Make sure the file you are uploading has a name that ends with .wie.
2. Make sure the file is not empty (open it in a text editor).
3. Make sure you are using the latest version of the plugin, WordPress and that PHP is up to date.
4. Deactivate all plugins except Widget Importer & Exporter then try again in case a plugin is interfering.
5. If you’re on a multisite network, go to its settings and try adding “wie” to “Upload file types”.
6. Temporarily activate https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/disable-real-mime-check/ then import.
7. Test by generating a .wie on current site then importing. If it works, something is wrong with your other .wie file.
Need More Help?
If neither uploading the .wie file nor the copying and pasting its contents work, start a new thread and provide the following information:
1. Confirm that you have tried the copy and paste method
2. Confirm that you have tried all suggestions above for uploading
3. Plugin version
4. PHP version
5. WordPress version
6. Web host name
7. Provide download link for your .wie file (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.)

1. Confirm that you have tried all suggestions above (Yes)
2. Plugin version (Version 2.5.4)
3. PHP version (7.4.4)
4. WordPress version (5.4)
5. Web host name (localhost)
Here are some things to check when you get “You must upload a .wie file generated by this plugin” while attempting an import. This is the most common error and can be caused by different things relating to your WordPress installation or hosting server.
If none help, start a new thread and provide the following information:
1. Confirm that you have tried all suggestions above
2. Plugin version
3. PHP version
4. WordPress version
5. Web host name
When I tried to import a .wie file, I got the error “You must upload a .wie file created by this extension.”
Stopping all plugins does not solve the problem.
WordPress 5.4
Plugin Version 1.5.5
You must upload a .wie file created by this extension.
Even when I uploaded the file from my site and tried to upload it, it did so.
What can I do to resolve this error?
As previously reported by @restored316, one of my clients also has this same issue. They are on Digital Ocean and I am on SiteGround. It works fine on SiteGround, but runs the error on DO.
Using the Disable Real MIME Type plugin – https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/disable-real-mime-check/ and then trying to import again will allow the .wie file to upload.

The site has not launched but I am happy to share the login details with you so you can take a look.
Basically there are 4 widget columns but instead there is one in the 1st quarter column and the other 3 are under it. The bottom bar is not 100%. Thanks
]]>I love this plugin. Two feature requests though:
1. Make it compatible with the Widget Context plugin for those settings:
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/widget-context/
2. Merge widgets on import. If I have already made an import and the widget exists, it’s not possible to merge it with new info/settings unless I delete that widget. Just one widget is OK, but if you have many it becomes less manageable. Maybe I’m wrong?!
Thanks again for a great plugin!
