Once I got an external crons triggering wp-cron.php, this thing rocked. I gave it only 4 stars because I’m not sure if it handles bounced emails.
If you use a scheduled crons, make sure you add this line of code to your wp-config.php file:
define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true);
You can then use your hosting crons job to trigger wp-cron.php like such:
wget -q -O - https://yourwebsite.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron >/dev/null 2>&1
Run it every five minutes and you should be good to go.

Didn’t work the first time and I didn’t want to take the time to find out why.
This plugin worked for me: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wysija-newsletters/

Most users won’t realize they need to sign up or create an SMTP server with API. You can use Mandrill.com, or various other API’s. Mandrill is easy and just a MailChimp spinoff. first 12,000 emails a month is free after that you have to start paying or just create your own server.

I love the interface, but the behavior is flaky.
I created several test subscriptions, but 1 did not receive the confirmation email (sent from alternate form on main site).
Of those created from the blog form, 1 did not receive the welcome email after the confirmation.
And none of them received the Day 0 or Day 1 subscription emails.

Only subscription confirmation, and first autoresponder email goes fine. Other autoresonder emails are not delivered at all. Just keep clicking those Run Now buttons. ??

I’ve been looking for an integrated newsletter and autoresponder plugin so we can self manage our own lists. Looking forward to giving this a full try.

Plugin has everything you need for serious work. No problem with the settings. Of course, you need an afternoon to be friends with the plugin. After that is a pleasure to work with it. And, of course, could always be better. But, I have tried several autoresponders and then I came back to this. It is now one of my favorites. Once again: the plugin works! If not working on your side, then it’s not a problem with this plugin. Look for the reason in your configuration, server, theme you use, …
My only complaint is the poor design of the subscribe form.

I’ve been using this plugin for almost 2 years, with just one repeated send problem, which was fixed the following day by an update.
I’ve set up the plugin to send an autoresponder upon subscription, and I send periodic newsletters to my subscribers.
The plugin is not perfect: the interface could definitely be more streamlined, and recently I started to miss the ability to put a captcha field (or a honeypot as someone suggested) in the subscription form. The lack of such feature is causing me the minor hassle of periodically checking subscribers and deleting fake ones.
But since the developer is working for free and keeping the plugin up to date, I have only praise for this plugin, and for its developer.
Thank you!
PS. Please note that my website is on a low-frills server, so if your installation is not working, it might be your provider’s fault, or just incorrect configuration.

This plugin is not working. It doesn’t even appear on the left menu bar after activation.

Plugin offers double opt-in only. However, with some small modifications, you can add single opt-in support. I wrote about it here: How to add single opt-in to WP Autoresponder
Not recommendable for a sequence of autoresponders: I cannot recommend the plugin. I put quite some time in it to make everything run. I have only one use case: Send out a sequence of autoresponders. However, it is completely unclear when these emails get send out. If you set a sequence of 0, they’ll send more or less immediately (with the next wpcron-event). If you set a sequence of 1, well, I don’t know. Something like “after 24 hours + X” or so. It is NOT “on the next day”. It was too much of a hassle to understand at what time the next autoresponder is sent, so I uninstalled the plugin.
Troubleshooting I figured so far:
For sending out mails: Make sure to setup the SMTP server correctly and note that new subscribers get wp-cron scheduled. Use cron view or something similar to check out whether your cron tasks are scheduled or not.
Two more possibilities for errors via SMTP:
Does your server use encryption? Can you connect to the SMTP server without a certificate warning?

Tried all advice and idea given on this site. Nothing. Autoreponders just won’t send out.
