I’ve been using Shield Security for quite some time now, and I can confidently say that it’s one of the best security plugins out there. This tool has already saved my website from serious hacking attempts on two separate occasions, giving me peace of mind knowing that my site is well-protected.
The plugin is straightforward to set up, and the features are robust, offering everything I need to keep my site secure. The support team is responsive and clearly committed to improving the product continuously.
Overall, Shield Security is an essential tool for anyone serious about protecting their website. Highly recommended!

Great experience, great plugin. Support are extremely quick, friendly, helpful and always got the extra mile. I have no problem recommending them as the best security plugin with the best support team I’ve encountered for a wordpress plugin.

Hello, I wanted to embed my site on another site so that I could implement a phone application, but the firewall blocks although the domain, IP, owner, server are the same, only the subdomain differs.

The Shield Security plugin works very nicely, and Paul went the extra mile (and then some) to help resolve a minor issue recently. Highly recommended!

If this is not your first security plugin you know that security is a complex topic and there can’t be the only one fits-it-all plugin in that area. For me it works very well for years now and I have seen constant improvements in concepts and ideas. I don’t like or need every little aspect of some features and feel a bit overwhelmed by the GUI sometimes, but what you don’t need you can ignore.
When asking the support for help or pointing to problems I always received same-day-responses (speaking of Pro) which is great, considering we talk about security.

Update[13.03.2024] – The issues that I have raised seems to to work now. I never had the intention to let down the work spent on creating such helpful plugin.
Clarify my doubt which I tested. Lets say at 12.00 PM a user IP is blocked for 1 day. After 12 hours later, when I as a user refresh the page , the page still says Restrictions lifted – 23 hours from now. There is no timer countdown to show the actual time left and the 24 hour ban will continue again if user refresh the page after 12 hours ? The Access Restricted page must show the real time left for restriction. Can you clarify this ?
Tried to test the offenses to check what happens after it hits the limit. For this I tried to spam the comment more than 10 times to trigger the cool down period. Offense limit was default 10 which I didn’t change, I hit this limit , got redirected to Shield page saying IP restricted which is good. The IP block is set 24 hours. Now help me understand, why after certain seconds, the IP which was blocked is able to access the website again. I was able to spam comments again got same IP restriction page, and now my offenses is 12. In a normal scenario if IP is banned for 24 hours, the same IP restrict message must be shown for total ban time and offense counter should not exceed the set threshold which is 10 in this case, not sure why after certain seconds I was able to access the page and spam again. If this is how your plugin works, I am afraid it has loopholes and bots can spam again and again as the IP ban does not work at all.
Too bad there is no way to write a direct message as only pro users support is available which limits such reporting with screenshots.

I had installed and uninstalled 5 different security plugins for my site prior to finding this perfect plugin. I am just starting out so I wanted something I could test for no cost before buying the upgraded version. The other plugins were difficult to set up, crashed my site and only had minimal security coverage. Shield Security was beautifully different. It was super easy to set up, and security management and reports will be a breeze. Thank you so much for this great product.

I have been using this on several sites I manage, and greatly appreciate the ease of setup, clear information on each page, and most importantly, it works great for blocking intrusions.

I’ve used two other WP security apps in the past. This one seemed much different. More thorough and easy enough to understand. I did the trial and immediately had no hesitation to upgrade. Any issues, or questions are promptly answered by their energetic support. This isn’t a new security app however the attention to its development, and efforts to continually improve this product is commendable and rare.

Dear Shield Security Team, I would like to request for the removal of certain information from the access restricted page. What i mean here is that, When a user triggers the firewall rule set, They would see a page which shows them a message that their access to the site is restricted. There is a few elements to be removed from this page:
1) The Shield Security branding. I dont feel like there is a need to let my visitors know what security plugin is being utilized as it is a part of the backend security operations therefore the confidentiality should be maintained especially when it clearly mentioned that it is a WordPress Security Plugin. I dont want my users to even know i’m utilizing wordpress so obviously at the first place.. Especially when a firewall rules is BREAKED, There is high chances that the rule breaker is eventually attempting to impose a threat to ny site and looking in on what is there to protect my site as part of their execution plan later on.
2) The total time in which the user would remain blocked. I dont see the need to let the blocked ones know that for how long they would be unable to access the site. Mostly all websites has their dedicated contact channels, the user could reach them to inform on the blockage and request for a removal of blacklist manually. If we felt we would like to inform for how long he would be remained blocked, Then we might reveal based on our own discretion. You can add a feature in your pro version where the site administrstor could customize the page and insert their contact channel on the blocked page to directly reach the site authority.

I tested most of the popular security plugins. But this is the best and I have been using it for several years. Today I was blessed with a free, fast and super professional support from the Shield team, which put the quality of this plugin at the highest level.

I’ve used it for years without a problem, and I don’t expect there to be.

Shield is the first plugin I install on every new WP website I spin-up for development or when ever I take over an existing website.
I use the Pro version and I swear by it! But I even install the free version on any website I work on if my clients don’t understand the value of true protection, because it works!
I have used other plugins for security before I tried Shield Pro, but NONE of the others are as robust and dependable!
It does not negatively affect the website performance and I love being able to network the setting updates with all of my websites automatically!
ShieldPro is simply the best security (and more) plugin for WordPress that you can get!
It’s Bullet Proof!
UPDATED review: 2023/12/16
Recently I reached out for support for an issue that came up involving one of my other plugins and SheildPro. Paul at Shield Security responded very quickly and within an hour he had a resolution that solved my conflict with the other plugin.
Shield Security and specifically ShieldPro is still number one in my tool-box of plugins and the only security plugin I will use as a web developer!
Cheers Paul and Thank you!

Terrible attitude from Support – I reached out because I lost all my work and the response I got was complete and utter arrogance followed by a refund without even exploring the problem.
Just a very arrogant answer see below:
MY QUESTION (I was a paying customer):
“I have recently setup Shield Pro and then i started building out my website. This morning I found all my pages have gone. Yet all the elements used to build the page are still in place”.
RESPONSE from ShieldPro
“”This isn’t possible. Please remove Shield Security and we’ll refund you. There is nothing in Shield that would cause you to lose all your work. If there was, we’d have 50,000+ complaints like this and we don’t have any.
We’ll refund you now. Thanks for trying ShieldPRO.””

Bloater plugin that complicates security using confusing language, so they can target vulnerable people who want to keep their site secure.
There are kinder, more approachable support people for security plugins out there who will certainly be more helpful.

Works as expected and the support here is very good. And they listen to suggestions.
I would like to have more options to block, using hostnames/agent types and some automatic refresh every xxx seconds for Traffic and Activity pages.
Finally this “CrowSec” doesn’t seem to offer much. At least for my site.

This plugin is totally useless and the staff aren’t helpful either.
I DO NOT recommend getting this plugin.

This is probably the best/most complete free security plugin for WordPress.
I’ve not tried the paid version so I can’t comment on that. I had exclusively been using iThemes and then they completely dumbed down their user interface (and, I think, got rid of some very good features). I like features and Shield has them in spades.

A friend recommended I try Shield and I haven’t had a single reget since. For a few years I was using the free versions of Wordfence and Sucuri together in order to get both a firewall and hardening. It was my tried and tested combination and I was reluctant to move, however I installed Shield on a site I was building and compared its performance to my Wordfence/Sucuri combination on a similar site. Obviously it wasn’t a perfect test but I was so pleased with Shield, both for blocking bots and in having minimal impact on my site’s performance. I’ve now changed all my sites over to use Shield and am very happy I have. Shield’s scanning performance has also been proven as it has just detected some files left over after a WordPress update. From receiving support through the Shield Facebook group for both that issue and another query I had when setting up Shield on a site, I also have to say that the speed and efforts put in to solving issues is really amazing.
It takes quite a lot to persuade me that something new is better but Shield, and the team behind the plugin, has certainly proved itself.
Edited a few months later to add:
I was asked to look at a site that has been hacked on and off for a few months despite a contract being in place with Sitelock to provide security and clean any hacks. Keeping the story short, Sitelock yesterday identified a hack and cleaned the site. This morning I activated Wordfence (it was already installed but deactivated on the site) and, after running a scan, it showed one back door, several unknown core files present and an issue with an admin account. I cleaned that all up, re-ran the Wordfence scan and it all showed clean. I then installed Shield and it picked up a further 7 files with alterations that I was then able to repair. (I did run further scans with other plugins but nothing else was found.) This is the second time I have seen Shield being so thorough and am so grateful to be able to use and recommend this plugin.

Hi Paul!
First of all, thanks for spending your time developing such a great plugin. It really is packed with a lot of very useful functionality. Our agency manages around 130 sites (if not mistaken) and we’ve installed Shield in dozens of them and will try to have it on all our sites soon, and it has been extremely helpful. For us getting ShieldPRO is a no-brainer because it’s one of the best security plugins (if not the best) and very affordable compared with other options.
It frustrates me to see you getting bad reviews from users who clearly don’t know what they’re doing on WordPress, or who don’t realize the impact of reviews and easily give it a one star just because they cannot afford it.
I wish you’d reach out to YouTubers to get more visibility because more people should know about Shield and its great features. I asked one of the smaller WP YouTubers if he knew Shield (his YT name is “Matt – WPress Doctor”) and he said he had never heard of it. He also said “Remember, not the best product wins, the best marketing wins! If they reach out to me and send me an e-mail I might make a video about it”. So you should reach out! ??
If you manage to reach someone like Paul from WPTuts, you’d get so much visibility. They probably won’t review your plugin for free but it might be worth it. They have tons of loyal followers who take advice from them seriously.
Can’t wait to see what else is in store with Shield in the future! I’d love to see the options to customize the robots.txt file from Shield directly, for example.
Anyways… Thanks Paul and wish you the best!

Ive been using Sheild Security for years. It was 5 stars. Not anymore. Lucky to be 2 stars.
I have both pro and free sites. Sheild Security FREE site analysis constantly and increasingly rates sites as DDDDCBDACCDD. Sites that were rated ABCCCDBDCA have slowly become DDCDDACBDA (just an example) – guilting free users (and their clients) to upgrade (and think of you as an idiot).
Stop playing games! Seriously! Not to mention the pain your plugin causes locking out sites constantly – ok – adjust the settings I hear you say – yep – to the point of making the features of your plugin pretty pointless.
Disappointed.
