Could BLC be behind the IP spamming our server ?

Hello,
we’ve been using BLC (local version) for years without issues, and we’re always using latest version as it updates automatically; same thing goes for our WP version, we’re up to date on everything.

The reason why i’m posting is we’re trying to understand if BLC is spamming our server or not, because we have some indications that it could be doing that.

Recently we’ve noticed an abnormally high CPU load on our server. By looking at our server logs, we can see an IP address is constantly bombarding URLs from our blog, but mostly images, to the point almost 20% of lines in our logs are from this IP address.

We’ve added htaccess rules to block this IP address (we now see in our logs it successfully gets 403 responses from our server).

But the weird thing is, right after we did this, BLC started getting 403s on every internal URL it scans (we use the old “local” mode); which seems to mean this problematic IP is related to BLC somehow.

So my question is the following : is the IP address 54.36.142.130 related to BLC in any way ?

Broken Link Checker Installation Failed

Hi, we’re having trouble installing BLC on our Production site. It installs and runs fine on our Dev environment but not Production or Preprod.

All environments are hosted on WP VIP using PHP 8.1, WordPress 6.6.1 and a custom theme.

Emails stopped working on our multisite

I am running a network of sites using WordPress multisite and so far only the root site is getting emails, but none of the other blog sites are sending email. We are using the Local link checker. Is this by design or can you help point us to a solution? We have checked that our crons are running and our site and server is sending mail.

No broken links reported with new BLC

We’re not getting any broken links detected since the update to 2.0. I’m sure there are some, as the previous version detected about 20, but we updated to 2.0 before fixing them, and now it says there are 0. It’s been at least a couple months since we corrected any links, and usually there are quite a few waiting for our moderation over that amount of time. How can we get BLC working again? Thanks!

Zendesk Cloudflare link check error

Hi folks, it seems that Zendesk links report back as broken by default these days.

Zendesk uses Cloudflare DDoS protection and reCAPTCHA, and this results in a “403 forbidden” error when bots scan Zendesk URLs.

Is there a workaround for Google’s reCAPTCHA service, similar to the way that Broken Link Checker can enable successful YouTube link scanning via API, which is also a Google service?

I’m guessing that maybe this is just a known bug with the Broken Link Checker plugin, where it fails with a 403 forbidden error for sites that use Cloudflare DDoS protection and reCAPTCHA, but I’d love to be wrong about this.

Edit: It seems that there’s a related support issue that I didn’t find previously because I searched this support forum for “Zendesk”, and found no matches.

In that forum, Adam (@wpmudev-support8) mentioned that the team was looking into possibly getting whitelisted as a “good bot”, about 1.5 years ago.

That topic closed with a suggestion to whitelist the affected domain, but this doesn’t solve the problem because whitelisting a domain means that the Broken Link Checker plugin will fail to scan the domain for broken links.

Chronic incorrect broken link warnings

I’m responding to Patrick F’s request that I open a new topic for my problem.

I’m getting endless false broken link warnings from Broken Link Checker. I go through the exercise of checking each link, and it’s always fine. I think out of many dozens of BL warnings, I had only one that referenced an actual broken link.

Not exactly sure what the problem is, though Patrick did mention to me that “…the plugin uses the server IP to ping the links, [and] sometimes the IP is blocked on the link destination causing the false positive.” Since I’m a relative newb, I’ve probably done something myself to cause the problem, but I’ve no idea how to correct it.

Looking forward to finding a solution.

False 403 Forbidden errors

I’m getting a lot of broken links with articles from [email protected]. The link works fine when I check it, but BLC says the author page is 403 Forbidden. this is only happening with author pages on [email protected].

Any thoughts on why this is happening?

URLs appear in Redirects list long after they are fixed

I am using latest version of BLC (1.10.9) with latest WordPress (4.3.1). Lately I am seeing an issue where once a URL appears in the Redirects list, it continues to remain there long after the 301/302 redirect issue has been fixed. This can be confirmed by accessing the URL in a browser or by checking it via a HTML sniffer tool. The browser or tool test will confirm the redirect is fixed, but still the BLC plugin will continue to show it as a redirect.

This continues for several weeks after the problem is fixed. The first time this happened with me, the URL was removed from the Redirects list after two months of the issue being resolved. And now it has happened a second time and I am still waiting for the URL to be marked OK.

SQL Script to find, and drop, tables on a Multisite

Hi everyone.

I help run a WordPress multisite for a College. There are a few hundred sites.

At one point I installed https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/broken-link-checker/. Works great except when you are done using it there are hundreds of tables in the database. I’m estimating that I can shave about 70MB off of the existing 300MB database if I can remove all of these tables.

So, there is the question – Does anyone know of an sql script that I use that will automatically find tables that include ‘_blc_’ in the name and will automatically drop that table?
