Developing my site/changing my theme on a separate domain

Hi,

So i’ve got a pretty big site that I need to change the theme on. This is going to take me quite a while, as the current theme I’m using is not compatible with the new theme. I’ve got about 100 pages that uses a template on the current theme that does not exist on the new theme, which will have to be manually reposted on the new theme as they disappear when I change the theme.

To do this, I’m thinking of copying the entire current site to another domain that I own but don’t use for anything at the moment, rebuild the site there, and once done I will move that wp-installation over to replace the site on my current “active” domain.

My question then is: if I check the “discourage search engines from indexing this site” option on the new domain while i rebuild the site there, will I be in the clear of running any risk of screwing up any SEO up in terms of duplicate content and so forth? Or do I need to do anything more in order to avoid this?

Is it possible for search to work if Discourage Search Engines is on? Reason being I want to use custom search for employees and clients but not for general public.

Discourage search engines from specific blog pages

I currently have “Discourage search engines” ticked for my entire blog, but what I want is just to discourage search engines from indexing certain personal posts, whereas I would like the rest to be indexed, e.g. book reviews and posts about movies.

If I add below code to the specific posts I do not want to be indexed, will it keep search engines out from those posts, so I can untick “discourage search engines” from the blog as a whole?

Enabled "Discourage Search Engines" — Now logo disappears & menu won't work

This is a nightmare, I have nearly completed a site but instead of password protecting the folder I decided to enable the “Discourage search engines” setting. Now the logo has disappeared and the dropdown menu won’t work.

Does anyone know how I can undo the damage caused by this? I do not want to have to redo this site (many many blog posts)…

I am building a new wp site in a subdirectory of a live site. I just want to be sure about something. If I check “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” I am only discouraging them from indexing the subdirectory or will it discourage indexing on the entire site? Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I don’t want to make a dumb mistake as 100% of my income comes from the live site. Please clarify for me… Thanks!
