I cannot believe that I am the only person interested to learn this without having to take an advanced course in PHP.
Child themes are the recommended way of modifying an existing theme. […] [T]he functions.php of a child theme provides a smart, trouble-free method of modifying the functionality of a parent theme. (codex.www.ads-software.com/Child_Themes)
The codex is not particularly helpful after that, especially with its really very poor example of how to encode a functions file. The example of coding // Do something.
is particularly demoralizing and unhelpful.
Creating a child theme when performing adjustments to your theme’s code can save you a lot of future headache. Child themes allow you to make changes without affecting the original theme’s code, which makes it easy to update your parent theme without erasing your changes. (elegantthemes.com | How To Create A Child Theme, And Why You Should Be Using One)
Because I know only enough about php to get myself in trouble, I would like to have my child theme be made up of the stylesheet, functions file and only one or two other files – so that I do not have to update every file, every time that the parent theme is updated.
Could someone please update the codex to give a few real-world examples of how to make minor customizations of a parent theme?
Thank you.

]]>Excuse me, but I think that is ABUSIVE. I’ve left the links in as ext, nofollow but if I had a little more nerve I’d wipe them entirely.
Yes, plugin writers deserve great credit for what they do, but a single link is more than enough, and preferably not a bunch of keyword-optmized do-follow links.
kvetch! kvetch! kvetch!
And yes, I do know there are alternatives… I’m just giving the guy a chance to rectify his unethical coding.

And the Archive doesnt know either; https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.ads-software.com/extend/ideas/topic.php?id=1935
]]>The ideal one is:
1.at the homepage, its a “Kvetch it” input form just like https://www.ads-software.com/extend/kvetch/
2.people no need to login to post (of course registered user can post too)
3.the “Kvetch” message has 140 characters limit, like twitter
4.the message will post to blog, but not publish immediately, only registered users can view it.
5.Users with “Editor” role will process these short messages, tag/category/comment/discuss it, decide publish it or not, where to publish.
it’s like a ticket support system too, but with above style.
Overall, it’s a lightweight feedback collection and process system.
have searched www.ads-software.com, but just too many messages to catch up.
so registered this forum, to ask the community, wish to get help.
Thanks in advance.
]]>1. drag and drop page ordering in the WP pages admin
2. individual templating of pages. NOT what is in the current page admin dropdown. I mean where you’d click to set the page template and you get sent to the same place as under the presentation menu. You click the thumb for which template you want for that page, you’re done. No need to create a custom template and ftp it so it appears in the dropdown of the page admin. It should be as easy as setting the site’s template in the presentation menu.
Thanks for any feedback.
]]>For example, on this page:
https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/
“View your profile” takes you here:
https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/profile/johnywhy
But on this page:
https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/156873?replies=5
“View your profile” takes you here:
https://www.ads-software.com/support/profile/273545
And these pages:
https://www.ads-software.com/
https://www.ads-software.com/extend/
does not even display “View your profile” or indicate that I’m logged in.
As a result of the above, I’m forever digging around from page to page until I can get to my profile.
I’m sure there’s a logic to it. I have an “plugins profile”, and a “comments profile”, and maybe others. But i find it confusing for the same term to mean different things in different places, and a pain in the butt to have to jump around until i can find the one i want, which is this one:
https://www.ads-software.com/support/profile/273545
Every page should have a way of getting to THAT one. And instead of “View your profile” for addins, the addins “profile” should not be called a profile, it should say “View your plugins” or something like that.
KVETCH!!!!
