2-3 times an hour, the site goes offline giving a Resource Limit Reached messagre iun the browser. It will be down for several minutes, then come back only to go down again. I have talked with my hosting service and they tell me that there are runaway processes running on the server but they are not helping me understand what might be causing them. They will kill processes, but they obviously return and the cycle starts all over.
I am running WordPress 5.3 using the Extra theme from Elegant Themes. It is not customized (except for colors and other adjustments in the Customize menu). I have updated WordPress, the theme, and my plug-ins to the latest version. I ran a virus scan on the site from my cPanel install and it is clean.
We only have two users listed on the system, myself and the editor of the newspaper. I have changed passwords on both users in an effort to make sure that neither account has been compromised.
I am using common, popular WordPress plug-ins on the site (nothing weird) and I have several WordPress sites I support on this same host. This one is the only site that is having this issue. All the others (they are on the same host and are using the same plug-ins as this site) are not having issues, but they are using Divi by Elegant Themes as their development environment. The Extra theme is a subset of Divi (it uses its tools but is a created theme by Elegant Themes) so I don’t think it is the problem (but who knows)?
How could I go about troubleshooting this site and get it fixed? I’d appreciate any suggestions as I have not been able to solve this and it has been going on now for several weeks.
We’ve recently launched a website that uses the WPML plugin to allow a Chinese version of our website. When trying to edit Chinese pages in the CMS, we constantly receive “Error 508 – Resource Limit Reached.”
We have gone direct to the WPML support team but they can’t reproduce the issue at their end and therefore can’t figure out the solution.
Our own Devs determined that the WPML plugin must be pulling too many resources such as CPU but after working with our web hosts on altering server settings, we are still not able to resolve the problem.
I’m wondering if the issue is related to the compatibility between WPML and WordPress? We’re desperate to resolve this issue but have no idea how to proceed now.
Thanks in advance.
Chelsea.
I have installed the Timely All-In-OneCalendar on a website for a few years now and it suites our need very well. However it has been incrementally consuming more and more resource on the website over time. It is now becoming unworkable, slowing up the website and often throwing up 508 Resource Limit Reached warning pages. I really need to understand/fix this issue. Please can you help?
I have noted that when I look at the raw access file (via cpanel) there are many requests being made by the timely calendar seemingly all the time (approx 2 requests per sec). An example of these requests are pasted in at the bottom of this post. If I look at the Bandwidth (via Metrics section on the cpanel) It seems from the graph that this is using between 2.5/3MB/min whereas other site I look after use nothing like this amount of bandwidth.
I presume this is what’s causing the site to be incredibly slow and throw up 508 resource limit has been reached pages all the time. Has anyone had a similar experience?
Having googled around and read various posts it seems that other people may have experienced this some years back (see this post from 2 years ago https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/max-cpu-usage/page/2. However, in this conversion I cannot find the “frequency of view cache purging” option that they suggest to change, apparently located in the calendar’s Advanced settings tab in Dashboard -> Events -> Settings. Also this conversation is also about a much earlier version of Timely’s calendar (1.10.11) so I’m not 100% convinced that this is relevant to the current version (2:3.12). It does however, seem that that resource usage by the Timely plugin is a recurring problem for many people.
Please can anyone help me to resolve this most frustrating issue. ( as mentioned earlier, a few of the requests in the raw access file are pasted at the bottom of this post and I have included my setup as well FYI)
Many thanks in advance
Phil

I have two websites both hosted at the same company. Recently they’ve been having issues. When I try to view the websites, or login to the wordpress dashboard, they keep loading and the loading starts looping, and finally I get ” 508 Resource Limit Is Reached” I thought this was a problem with the host (I still do) but when I talked to them they suggested it may be a problem with the new wordpress version 4.4.
When I check the error log, I get multiple errors Including:
[16-Dec-2015 11:23:58 UTC] PHP Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with www.ads-software.com or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to www.ads-software.com. Please contact your server administrator.) in /home/shezenou/public_html/wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php on line 158
And several others. I cannot even access the wp dashboard. What might be the problem? Please help.
I recently installed my WordPress site on my host’s server, Innerplanet. At first I got a “resource limit reached” error, but then after some time, the site became partially visible but not after an extremely long load time (over 10 seconds).
After scouring the forums, I did the following:
1) Added a php.ini file with code:
memory_limit = 256M ;
to wp-admin folder
2) updated the wp-config.php file as well with
/**
define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’);
3) deactivated most plugins, but kept WooCommerce active.
My host says the PHP memory limit is set to 256M. They say I’m hitting the RAM/CPU limits of the server, which is 1GB. This has happened only since the new install. They say, “This is due to a bug in the software being ran under your account, non optimized scripts, or a very high amount of traffic to the website.” Since this happened at 12:30 am my time, it is NOT due to high amount of traffic.
So, none of the above fixes worked, and my host is saying the PHP memory limit is not the issue.
Additionally, the error log in cPanel states:
“/home/xxxxxx/public_html/.htaccess: Invalid command ‘php_value’, perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration”
Any help is appreciated!
Thank you.
I have (over the last 3 weeks) found all my sites that I have on a resellers package hit the 508 resource limit. There is no one common issue, such as a plugin that all sites use. I am at a loss!
The host suggests that I put the sites on a dedicated hosting but for all my sites this would cost a fortune. They are not heavy traffic sites (around 100 visits a week) and not massive number of pages (10).
One site that is happening to is not even live but is me refreshing, as I add content and change css!!
Is this an issue with the updated WP? I always keep WP and the plugins up to date.
Anyone else suddenly come across this problem. It has been in the last 2 weeks for me and happens all the time on multiple sites.
Thanks
Chris
