I’ve just recently taken over at a company who has lost all of their access to the WordPress admin site. When going to the wp.login page, it just shows up with an error 404. The site also has many breaks in the coding when access by the public.
We have now built a new site through Squarespace and are ready to publish and attach our existing domain.
My question is, our Domain is through GoDaddy but our web hosting is through Panthur. If we connect up the exisiting domain to our Squarespace site and aren’t able to deactivate our WordPress site through logging in and deactivating it, will information from the WordPress site still show up on the web when our domain is connected to the new Squarespace site?
I’m very new to web design stuff and am a little confused with the setup.

]]>Step 1. Selfhosted site is disconnected via JetPack
After I disconnect JetPack, I get the following when visiting “My Sites” on WordPress.com:
“You have 1 hidden WordPress site. To manage it here, set it to visible.”
This refers to my omarrr.wordpress.com
site. At this point I can not access my WP hosted site.
Step 2. Selfhosted site is connected via JetPack
Next I activate JetPack on my selfhosted site. When visiting “My Sites” on WordPress.com, this time I get only one site, with a lock next to it’s name. This refers to my omarrr.wordpress.com
site.
This is the first bug I encountered: I assume that connecting my selfhosted site via JetPack, should have no effect on whether or not I can access my WordPress.com hosted site on WordPress.com.
Step 3. Activate WordPress tools under JetPack on selfhosted site
Next I activate the “WordPress.com Tools” that appear on the third column under JetPack overview page. This is done on my selfhosted site. These changes have no effect visiting WordPress.com. I can only see my omarrr.wordpress.com
site.
Step 4. Visit WP.com from selfhosted site
After the steps above, there is a “Go to WordPress.com” button on the JetPack overview page. This button has a link as follows: https://wordpress.com/plugins/omarrr.com?from=jpnux
When visiting WordPress.com via this link I can see my selfhosted site on WordPress, however:
– my original omarrr.wordpress.com
site is now gone from the dashboard
– if I log out and log back in (or use the desktop app), the selfhosted site is gone and the omarrr.wordpress.com
site is visible again.
Expected result
After enabling JetPack and activating WP tools, I shoud be able to access my selfhosted site on wordpress.com and on the desktop app, however this is not the case and the site never appears.
For clarity, my site urls are the following:
– omarrr.wordpress.com (private wordpress hosted)
– omarrr.com (selfhosted)
Thank you for your help!
]]>I posted in the wordpress.com forum asking advice on how to proceed with changing to a self-hosted site (as I am aware that there is some kind of service offered to make the transition easier… one that you have to pay for).
My questions were not answered in that forum and, indeed, the topic was immediately closed for discussion and the content is not visible now (although the subject heading is). I have no idea why!
I have been happy with WordPress but have been using a free theme which has fairly poor navigation capabilities and, rather than trying to customise, I am thinking of self-hosting and using a theme as close to what I want as possible.
I wondered a couple of things… and they might be dumb questions but:
Will I be able to maintain contact with those I am following? Will their posts still appear in my reader? Will I have a reader?? Will my posts still be visible to my followers? Will they still be my followers??
The community aspect is what I have loved the most, so I would hate to lose that at the expense of a snazzier looking site.
I also want to know what the recommended steps are for someone in my position (wanting to transfer content from a WordPress site to a self-hosted WordPress site whilst maintaining the same name… and same followers/blogs I follow).
Thank you!
