Shorter Posts on the Home Page

I have my site setup so that whatever I post goes to the home page so that anyone that views the site can see the recent posts. However, they are posting in their entirety. Some of these posts are pretty long and anyone viewing may not see the other ones because they have to scroll down so far. Is there any way to make the posts on the home page just a sample of the post, so that anyone that wants to read it has to click the post and be redirected to the actual page? I have the free website so I’m not sure if this is possible. If you want to take a look at the site here’s a link https://reputablegamer.com/
Also, I do not know what version of WordPress I have. I do everything over the internet. Do I need to install something onto my computer?

Replacing the_content to the_excerpt() for short posts.

Hello. I am trying to have my posts display short version on a post page.

I am using twentyfourteen template
I set my posts to display on a custom page, not in home page.
I went to wp-content >>> themes >>> twentyfourteen >>> content.php
and replaced the_content with the_excerpt.

Now my custom posts page displays short versions of the posts, but there is no link to the full version of the post.

I do not want to add “read more” manually to each post
I do not want to add excerpt manually to each post

According to codex replacing the_content with the_excerpt will automatically display first 55 words of the post. It does but there is no “read more” or anything else to the full post in the end.

Please advise.

Short down posts

Hi,
Can’t figure out how to short down the posts that displayed on the front page. I have a ‘Continue Reading’ button in my themes and it pop-ups below every posts, but everything I write seems to be the entire blog anyway.

How do I shorten this down so that if you want to read can just click the coninueread-button, and reach the whole document?

As the title says.
I posted news with a link in the text, over a word (word). On the main page, the link is not there, it only appears when I open the post by clicking on it’s title. I’ve searched through WP settings, and after that on this forum how to make that link appear in the short post as well, but haven’t been very lucky.

I had the same problem and the solution presented worked perfectly for me.

But I would like to display the […] too! How I can? I cant find the code that manage the affixing of […]

I know that […] make poor sense in this case because there are no more words in the post but links in the excerpt do not work, so with […] I suggest readers to open the full post…

Any idea?

A plug-in with alternate post templates?

I’ve seen this in so many blogs but can’t find the plug-in:

Two or more templates for a blog post. One that’s full with a big title, byline, etc., great for full stories. Another that’s minimal, without showing a title or perhaps just a minimal formatting; great for quick notes or tweets.

What do you use to help your site do this? Suggestions?

I’d love to find a solution to my dilemma.

I have a site that has contributions from a lot of people. Each has their own category, so all their posts can be collected on their own page. At the top of this page I have a sticky post, which is a very brief sentence introducing the writer. Is it possible to get rid of the “Continue reading” link from this one post, since you’ve already read the sentence so “continue reading” is redundant?

plugin to make short posts out of focus

for the type of blog i run, there are often many news articles i would like to link to, but i don’t want to post them as main posts on the blog. i would like to have these posts displayed somewhere else out of focus, possibly on the sidebar. is there a plugin to do this? to make shorter, smaller posts somewhere else?

Should I make every ENTRY its own post?

I am fairly new to WP, but have been creating sites for years now. So naturally I have loads of questions regarding WP, so I thought I would get more involved in your forums. I believe this is my first post..here goes.

I have a large library/index type of website. For example, I have nearly 3,000 items listed in alphabetic order. Such as 100 in category A, 200 in category B and so on. Now each category, or letter (A-Z) is a single page with all the appropriate listings, aka one large post.

My question is hopefully a simple one. What are the Pros & Cons of listing one large post with many different ‘entries’ or ‘listings’, rather than making that one large post into many small posts?
