Ok Over the years I have run several blogs for one purpose or another and the hosts always merge the blog files under the same public html folder and the database (which I try to keep neat) has held all the DB files for all these blogs.
I moved to hostgator and I’m getting DB connection errors (not all the time) but I usually see them once or more per/day… due to wordpress creating multiple images for every image uploaded my content uploads folder is around 1.7GB All my images are capped at 176kb and they are smushed even smaller…
I’m techy but not a DB or PHP coder, or anywhere near good enough I feel to fix this…
Can I install a new WP install on a different domain and recreate my blog there. export my articles and import them (yes using the built-in WP tool) and then ensure the media files (2700 of them according to the media tool in WP (Yes I have a LOT of image files)… But I don’t want to lose all my media file links… I do not want to have to recreate these from scratch…
This way I would start with a fresh install, a fresh database and it should be clean of all the garbage that has been left over from years of “programming issues” where things get left behind (orphaned code)…
Also I’m guessing I will have to get a new host account so as to not cross pollute by doing the new domain, the host will probably put the new domain and install in the same directory as all the rest…
Have I missed anything or is there easier ways to do what I want to do…?
Thank you ahead of time…
]]>I messed literally everything related to this website up. I have an AWS Lightsail instance and I was trying to get an SSL certificate and ended up editing the .htaccess and wp-config.php files, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Now my website has a little lock icon next to the address bar, but it keeps showing me ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS. My code is a mess and I want to just start over and get rid of everything except my domain name. How do I delete my website without being able to get into it or the wp-admin dashboard? And do I need to delete my aws lightsail instance and create a new one?
My main aim is to just start over and do it right, now that I kind of know what to do. I just don’t know how to revert all the changes I’ve made.
Please help!
]]>Have already had great response to a previous query.
Thanks for any assistance
]]>I started and selected a theme and tried building a simple page. Somewhere my selected theme evaporated and I’m stuck w/ 2016 I think. When I click on Change Theme, I don’t see all the original themes, just 2014 and 2015.
I must have something badly screwed up. Reading on here and elsewhere I see that I need to “start over”. The instructions say to go to my webhost’s control panel and delete my SQL database. I did. That did not seem to change anything.
I also Published before I was ready [because I didn’t know what “Publish” was going to do]. Now my old website [www.1derful.info] is redirected to my totally screwy WP page. How do I “unpublish”?
Frustrated. Confused. Unimpressed.
]]>I have tried, to no avail, the steps on the Codex “Changing_The_Site_URL”.
Honestly, I have no idea what I am doing.
]]>1. Thank you for sharing this lovely project/endeavor with the WP Gang.
2. All was working when I first installed and tinkered, but then I tinkered some more, naturally changing what was not to be changed … “WARNING: changing this value is not recommended. Changing the post-type name may break permalinks, alter search criteria, and you may have to rename your template files.” … thinking, I will just delete and start over if I foul something up. I am at the beginning stages of this website build and the formatting is just taking shape as far as this new ability to manipulate databases of specific information, thanks to you and your nifty plugin, but it is all over my head, for certain, for now.
3. So, the reason I default to delete and start over, is this, … the list I want to display via the shortcode, does indeed display a list, the but is, that last two, and most recent entries do not fall into proper ‘ascending order’ which parlays into alphabetical, which I love, viola, perfect, and I don’t know why they are being problematic. Also, any new entry into the same ‘content type’ slot/label/file does the same thing, meaning the new entry just sits at the bottom and/or top of the list, when you choose the ascending or descending option when generating shortcode via the icon while on an existing page.
4. I don’t know how to correct whatever problem I caused, or if I caused the problem, which I know I likely did. So, I thought let me just start over, but I am not sure even, how to do that, start over and delete, so that everything is really gone, and the kink undone.
5. Oh, and somewhere in the ‘how to’ we are supposed to place a .php file in the theme being used, ok, yes, I did that just to help you diagnose the issue here, and I did update the name of the file doing a strict copy/paste from the sample template page to the actual file name , so as to avoid any typing error, and then of course I did the copy/pasting in of the sample template php file contents.
5. What do you advise?
Thanks much,
B
