While trying to do 6 plugin updates. I eventually ran them one at a time and they all worked.
My problem is 2 fold:
1) Can the message give us a hint about what the problem is?
2) since the updates finished individually without further warning, are we safe or not???

Yet, I am not sure why I have any incosistent file perms as I had just run a recommended script file for setting perms on a wp site (i.e. https://gist.github.com/macbleser/9136424 ) and so the file perms should have been good – unless this script is no good!
Maybe someone knows what could be causing this.
Thanks,
Jeff
I was updating through the Dashboard. Now Our Theme login needs updating but I know if I do the update it will throw our website back into maintenance mode and will get the same error about “Could not create directory” message.
Hope this gets resolved quickly and hoping that someone helps us out or will a patch be made available since more than 1 person is having this issue?
Regards Karyn
Every attempt gets an error indicating the directory could not be created, for example:
An error occurred while updating GoodBye Captcha: Could not create directory. /public_html/wp-content/plugins/goodbye-captcha/
And of course the .maintenance file is left behind, which I have to manually remove.
I have tried:
I have not had any problems with this install prior to the 4.4 upgrade, even as late as last night, before the upgrade, I installed a couple new templates (no they were not activated) successfully.
Any help is appreciated.
