]]>I’ve come across an unusual problem with several sites I manage. Lately, the www and non-www redirects have not been working — they come up as blank pages (i.e., example.com will come up blank rather than redirect to www.example.com and vice versa) or show a different — heavily distorted — version of the website.
I did quite a bit of troubleshooting, and found out the following:
– Using plugins such as Simple WWW Redirect, 301 Redirect, and All in One Redirect do not always fix the situation (though sometimes Simple WWW Redirect does)
– Adding redirect rules in cPanel does not work
– Downgrading PHP (in at least one case to PHP 7.1.33) *DID* work – the redirects suddenly worked as expected
Further, in one case, installing plugins led to error notifications stating the plugin didn’t install, but refreshing the page showed that it had installed.
Some other notes:
– The affected sites I noticed are on three separate servers with two different hosting companies
– All have Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates
– All are using different themes
– One theme wouldn’t let me log in — I received a “Cannot modify headers” error in wp-config through unpluggable.php no matter if I used www or non-www. (In this case, it needed to be a www address, and the site itself worked.)
– HOWEVER, I was able to log in again after manually upgrading from WordPress 5.5.3 to 5.6 via FTP – another reason why I suspect WordPress may be partially involved
– I disabled plugins manually through Filezilla, which did not fix the problem
Since these issues only started happening recently and they are all similar issues but slightly different between websites, I suspect that there are conflicts between PHP, WordPress, and the themes, or some combination thereof. However, after spending several hours digging, I haven’t been able to find anything definitive — and in fact very little mention.
Right now, the answer is not to upgrade PHP, but I don’t believe that’s a good long-term plan.
Any ideas what might be happening, or where I might look for help?
Thanks,
~Graham
