Call to undefined method WP_Screen::is_block_editor()

  • One of my sites is (disappointingly) still running the 4.9 branch of WordPress. When I activate version 1.0.36.1, I get the fatal error “Call to undefined method WP_Screen::is_block_editor()” when I try to view my user profile:
    Rank Math - Call to undefined method WP_Screen::is_block_editor()

    I downgraded to 1.0.35.3 and the problem goes away. It appears related to the recent Gutenberg additions.

    • WordPress 4.9.13 (single site, not multisite)
    • PHP 7.0.33
    • nginx, MySQL 5.7, Chrome 79, macOS 10.14.6…

    I’m also seeing the same error in the latest release of ClassicPress (1.1.2), which is WordPress with Gutenberg stripped out.

    For the record, I personally love Gutenberg. Unfortunately, several of my clients refuse to switch or upgrade and use the Classic Editor plugin. :/
