I use the Classic Widgets plugin to access the old version of the Widgets page. On upgrading to 1.50.1 of SiteOrigin Widgets bundle, the Widgets page becomes unavailable.

If I roll back to 1.50.0 I can access the Widgets page, and add new widgets, but none of the existing widgets show (though they do still work in the site).

    Can this be fixed?!

    Thanks

Hi, thanks for posting your question.

Please, try upgrading and then start the troubleshooting process by ruling out a plugin or theme conflict. You can do so as follows:

    • Upgrade.
    • Temporarily change to a default theme like Twenty Nineteen.
    • Temporarily deactivate all plugins except for Classic Widgets and the SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle.
    • With a default theme, Classic Widgets and the Widgets Bundle activated, does the issue persist?

OK, with 2020 theme, classic widgets and widgets bundle, all worked fine.

So I then added everything back one at a time, and have tracked down the issue…

It is Smart Slider 3 which, when activated at the same time as your widgets bundle, stops the classic widgets screen from displaying. If either is activated on its own, there is no issue.

    Which is odd!

So I can work round it, but if you do manage to make it compatible, please do let me know.

    Thanks for your help,

    John

    Hi John,

The type of issue you’re facing is a common sign of the server blocking the request. I recommend reaching out to your hosting provider about this and asking if mod_security (or an equivalent) is installed, and if so, are you getting blocked by it.

    Kind regards,
    Alex

So you’re saying that the server doesn’t block the classic widgets plugin unless your plugin and SmartSlider are also active at the same time? Sounds like a long shot!

The hosting provider will just tell me it is a plugin issue and I should contact yourselves.

Ah well, I’ll use different plugins instead.

    Hi,

So you’re saying that the server doesn’t block the classic widgets plugin unless your plugin and SmartSlider are also active at the same time

I’m not directly saying that, no. The issue you’re facing likely doesn’t relate to any one of the specific plugins you mentioned and instead relates to a hosting provider specific rule for mod_security (or an equivalent).

Rules are effectively a special pattern that the server checks each request for and if it matches it’ll block the request. It’s very easy for a pattern to be a little too general and block things incorrectly and that’s called a false positive. False positives are unfortunately very common so your hosting provider’s technical support will be aware of this type of issue and will be able to help you with this issue. Fixing this issue won’t just help you, it’ll help their other users also so they have every reason to help – we would happily fix this issue if it was on our end for the same reason.

    Kind regards,
    Alex
