100% Apache CPU load

For some weird reason, right after the installation I had to first comment out some parts of WordPress 2.0.5’s code to make the thing run a little faster. No big deal. A problem that remained, however, is that when publishing a post or updating a published post, Apache’s CPU load flies up like a bio-mechanical rocket on steroids, sometimes reported to be over 100%, but that seems to me like a bug in “top”.

Oh well, the problem occurs right after clicking the “Publish” or “Save” button, causes the server to be cooking for a minute or five, eventually drops me back from the post.php page to edit.php.

The strange thing is that I have no pinging or backtracking enabled, disabled caching, have no plugins enabled and am currently looking for the problem in the “functions-post.php” file. Another peculiarity is that the entire admin area is not responding, but starting a new session solves this problem (but the CPU load remains high).

Erhm, any suggestions for some hack to solve this problem? If this post is a little hard to comprehend, blame my lack of sleep.
