• I am very busy and I have wasted hours and hours trying to get one simple thing to work: email-to-blog w/ attachments.

All I need is to use my e-mail software to update my website. I need to be able to attach images, just like a normal email. I need it to post in real time (no cron job). I have not been able to get Cronless Postie working, although wp-mail works fine.

I don’t even care if I use Postie or for that matter WordPress – all I need is a system that can update my website via e-mail. That’s all I ask and I’ll pay $100.00 to the first person who can help me.

If you are interested send me an e-mail: [email protected].

    Thanks.

  • Note that it’s impossible to get post-by-email to work real time. Something has to make WordPress go out and check for e-mail.

That can either be a cron or by someone (including you) visiting a page on your website.

I thought that was the point of cronless postie???

Do you mean to tell me there has been no push technology invented that will execute a script on a server without human intervention besides cron? I realize you need a browser to make a request to the server in order to serve a page, but surely someone has figured out by now how to make a web server self-request, no?

Still, my understanding was that cronless postie would check Postie like it was an RSS feed. With the whopping 2 lines of documentation it is difficult to tell what the developer had in mind. (not that it is really documentation – it is actualy 2 lines of comments in cronless_postie.php)

WordPress will go out and fetch e-mails on it’s own, but it can’t just start up and do it on it’s own. WordPress is a script, not an program running on the server.

Now, I’m not saying someone literally has to go tell WordPress to go and check for new e-mails, it’s very possible for it to know that it’s been over X long since it last checked, but someone (anyone, even a random person) would have to visit a page on your site which would then run WordPress and during that, a plugin or whatnot could realize that it needs to check.

Basically, if you don’t have a cron going and no one ever visits your site, WordPress (just like all scripts) won’t be “on” or running.

And that’s all a cron is doing – running WordPress and any plugins associated with it.

Oh, and are you dealing with the out of date, no longer updated version of Postie?

Or are you dealing with this verion which seems to be supported based on the new comments it’s getting?

No, I’ve got the latest version. I’ve installed wp-cron but it isn’t working either. It can’t find it’s admin page. Any advice?

And I’m still offering $100 to anyone who can get this working on my site. I’m going to loose a client if I can’t get it to work.

For $100, you can get a host for at least an year with cronjobs enabled, and then fetch the old wp-mail url from the new host every 10 minutes or so.

Look for a free or very cheap web site monitoring services. Set it up to check your client’s site once every x hours (minutes?) by visiting https://yourUrl/blog/wp-mail.php.

    Bingo. Cronless.

No, I’ve got the latest version. I’ve installed wp-cron but it isn’t working either. It can’t find it’s admin page. Any advice?

Uh, contact the plugin’s author who happens to provide support for free (at least from what I can tell)?

“…..I’ll pay $100.00 to the first person who can help me.”

I think, it was a direct “purchase order”.

    And confirmed, again:

“And I’m still offering $100 to anyone who can get this working on my site. I’m going to loose a client if I can’t get it to work.”

From this point on, though the poster may have many reasons not being able to solve the problem, none is our concern, here.

    There is business.

You take it or leave it.

    But Kassad – I want my 100 first! ??

Continuing from HandySolo’s post, one I’ve found great is Montastic.

Kassad: No. Maybe our ethical systems are different, but when I see someone throwing money at a problem and asking someone to help, I feel it almost necessary to mention a quick solution that would *not* rip the person off of $100.

    Firas:

I agree with you and I do think along the same line.

I would just have offered free help notwithstanding the money offer, if I could have one. Or better to say, I never do support for money.

But my analysis of the situation showed the following:

In spite of the fact that the Postie plugin’s home offered a very detailed and satisfactory help, the folks here also supplied good enough advice even if they had their “fun”, as well, the problem still remained.

Also, the poster expressed urgency and the possibility of loosing a client.

Also, there was not enough data about the site and the positions of the participants. It is true that changing host is a good solution but we do not know if the poster is authorized to do that and it is within the needed time frame.

We do not even know if the poster has really exhausted every possibility and there is no something unique problem perhaps.

As the offer was very explicit, I thought, it was a feasible solution to grab the job if there is one who is up to it and is in need of some money.

    ***********************************************************

The reason, I make this issue so detailed is that – as it was predictable – there is a “boom” in novice wordpress users who want to blog but know just next to nothing about the basics of computers and/or web.
Already, there are “zillions” of posts which are silently skipped because they are beyond hope.

It is also common practice in open source world to give away software for free and offer paid support.

I think, that WordPress just has come to this threshold.

I do not like it either as it is more fun to hack and tender something which is something like a common child of thousands who are more or less peers.

But what about the newcomers who do not know and possibly will not want to know about profession just want to play with their new tool ?

For them, there is only the possibility of paid support, in my opinion.

    ********************************************************

Now, all the above are not connected to the original post and I would be really happy if the poster would have succeeded to solve the postie problem without pay.

“Do you mean to tell me there has been no push technology invented that will execute a script on a server without human intervention besides cron?”

    Thats pretty accurate.

Executing a script without human intervention is exactly what crontab was made for.

The suggestion of using an external service to call the page is a decent one — though if it were me, I would use cron and fetch OR cron and fetch. (they do the same thing)

Sometimes clients ask for things that cannot be done. (just an aside)
