Hello! Upgrading to 2.1 gave me problems, so I tried a completely fresh 2.1 installation (brand new database, new directory). Double-checked database privileges with phpmyadmin and file permissions (by changing everything to 777 temporarily) to no avail. mysql version is 5.0.22 and php version is 5.1.6. Executing php wp-admin/install.php directly from the command line gives:
PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 368640 bytes) in /home/asteiner/public_html/wp21/wp-admin/upgrade-schema.php on line 101
Any suggestions? System configuration should be ok, as 2.07 (still) works brilliantly…

  • It’s saying the php memory was exhausted. It’s probably set at 8M – ask your host to bump it to 16M (php memory only). Most hosts will no problem.

Though it worries me a bit that the installation requires more than 8MB of memory, changing the limit from 8M to 16M in /etc/php.ini (I’m on a Linux system) fixed my problem and the upgrade now proceeds flawlessly. Thanks!
