• Hi

I have recently moved hosts. I uploaded my saved wordpress folder, with all my files in it (eg pages, photos)

I created a new database on my new host, and added that new database to the wp-config.php

I then went thru the process at wp-admin/install.php

my site appearred, but without the old files!!

Help, I know it’s there, just have to work out how to get it displayed

    regards

    Mark

  • What exactly are you missing? The design elements or the content of your blog (posts, categories, etc)?

The content is stored in the database. Simply uploading the old files will only retain the design. If you’re missing your content, you’ll have to import you’re old database.

I am missing the content of my blog, I have changed hosts, my old site was deleted off my previous host. I did download all wordpress files, but on moving to new host, had to set up new db

What can be done now? is my old site lost forever? damn!!

Yeah… that’s not good. If you don’t have a backup of the SQL, you may be out of luck. Depending on who you hosted with, you may be able to see if they made backups… they do make backups… I guess the question is whether they make those backups available to their clients or if they’re solely for internal use.

I was sent a homedir folder, I am uploading it now, but where will I find the database information? What part of the homedir?

Is there a file in there with an .sql extension or with a .csv or .txt? The .txt would have to be like backup.txt, not readme.txt

thanks blepoxp, I’ve checked most folders, cant find this file, where would this file be located, which folder?

Normally, it shouldn’t be in any folder. The database is NOT part of the WP file structure.
If you have backep up only the files… that’s bad news. There is nothing in the files – all your content is (was?) stored in the database. You may want to ask the host about a DB backup.

Unfortunately, Unless you have a MySQL Backup (Which is usually .sql .txt or if you download it via WordPress’s export feature .xml) your posts are probably gone. As wordpress stores posts in the MySQL Database, and not in a file like a .html file.

Your only other option (like rudolf45) said would be to see if your host still has a Database backup.

I had one host transfer my site to their servers via a cpanel to cpanel transfer.

My site ‘should have’ appeared as was on the new servers, it didnt, and now on my new new servers, we are trying to retrieve whatever we can

So for future reference I need to do a MYSQL backup, but just for interest sake, will a cpanel to cpanel transfer ever work for a wordpress site?

Correct. You need a backup of your files and a backup of your database. If you want your database and you didn’t make any backups you’ll have to contact your old host and request a backup of the database.
