API-KEYS

Your API key will be available in your wordpress.com profile. You need to register there to get a key, even if you don’t want to set up a blog at wordpress.com.

Once you’ve done that, you can copy the key to your own site.

If you have registered at wordpress.com and can’t find your API key, you’ll need to ask there.

Thank you for your response LesBessant, but I still can’t find what I need. When I go to my member profile it doesn’t have a place that shows an API key. I had a friend who has their basic blog hosted by WordPress and when we go to their profile the API key is just sitting there, but not on mine which is being hosted elsewhere. Not sue what to do.

Read it again! (why is so difficult to follow simple instructions?)

Thanks Moshu, but I did follow instructions. I got an API key but that does absolutely nothing. Any other instructions that may not work?

Sorry, but I don’t understand what is not working.
Did you install the plugin?
Did you enter the API key where it is requested?
Did the Blogstats appear in your Dashboard after executing all the above?

I really don’t understand all the confusion over API keys. It’s just not that freakin’ difficult.

1. You go to https://wordpress.com/signup and create a new wordpress.com account. If you already have an account with wordpress.com, just login on https://wordpress.com and skip this step.

2. After you’ve created your account and verified your email and such, you should get an API key in the second email. If you don’t, then you can go here: https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/profile.php and login and there’s a line of text that reads: Your WordPress.com API key is: APIKEYHERE. Don't share your API key, it's like a password..

3. Copy and paste that key onto your own blog where it asks for it.

It’s really not that difficult. Just remember that WordPress.com and your copy of WordPress on your own site are two different things, even though they may look similar.

You only ever have to do this once. That API key works with both Akismet and the Blog Stats plugin and whatever else they come up with in the future.

The confusion simply arose when people are baffled that we are still required to sign up at wordpress.COM to acquire the API keys when they their site is already up and running. I only come to this knowledge yesterday, as a matter of fact when I need to activate Akismet – my host server installed wp for me and I never aware of other sign-up requirement until I come across this problem.

This may seemed elementary to some who are more familiar with wp but for beginners, it’s frustrating and to read that we need to sign up, again, come across as a little disbelieving.

On a positive note however, I managed to active my Akismet with no problem. One thing though – I still do need to register at www.ads-software.com to post this here – confuse much?
