Actually, creating a network as Esmi posted above is not as difficult as it seems, and it’s built into WordPress. You’ll be able to run multiple blogs from a single installation in minutes if you follow the guide carefully.

My main issue is that I want to give clients full Author access to their individual WP accounts while I maintain control over the domain names I purchased for them – in addition I don’t want any of the penalising from search engines that might go with domain pointing / frames etc. etc.

Do you recommend a fast, cheap hoster in the UK that allows manual configuration (not 1-Click apps)? (Assuming DNS config for this is straightforward from the domain provider I’m with and again, doesn’t cause problems with search engines.)

Almost all hosting providers support installing WordPress manually. In fact, I can’t think of any that don’t. Most 1-click installers are simply an option, not a requirement. As for UK-based host recommendations, I’ve only used US-based hosts, but searching via Google should turn up some helpful reviews.

And you won’t. Domain mapping doesn’t involve either one of those.

What you want can be done two ways:

– set up a separate install for every domain in your single web account (millions of people do this every day)

– set up one install, create the network, add sites, use the domain mapping plugin.

Hi Andrea, thanks. Does this mean (with your option A) that I’ll need a separate hosting account for each install or are you saying that (even in the case of ‘Websites for Dummies’ hoster, 123reg.co.uk) I will be able to host multiple installs and configure it all manually?

This is what 123reg said:

“The hosting package with 123 Reg will only allow you to have 1 domain linked to it.
Which means you can only have one Word Press web site per hosting package.”

“No, this feature would not work on shared 123-Reg hosting as it requires bespoke Apache configuration.”

According to your webhost, you can’t do either one of my suggestions.

If you want to use multisite or have more than one wordpress install with different domains names in one hosting account, you’ll need to switch hosts.

Well as it happens I paid WP for Domain Mapping ($10 yr) and have started to get fairly decent results on google. That was the main problem. Really, if the free templates for WP.com get a little better, there’s not much reason for going through the rigmarole of full .org installations, learning codes and paying for extra hosting etc. anyway! Jeesh, I got enough to do already! Thanks all.
