• Hi.

I user to have a parent categori like this:

    (parent) Music
    (Child) -rock
    (Child) -electronic
    (Child) -pop

Today I deleted the parent category, thinking that all the child categories would then become ordinary categories. Sadly, they did not.

Now I’m missing all my child categories. They are gone from the “manage categories”, gone from my site and the list you tick when writing a post.

But when I try to create a category with the same name, wordpress tells me that the category already exists.

Can I somehow get them back?
    Anyone else tried this?

    Thanks in advance

  • you’d need to re-create a category with the same ID to make that happen.

Your best bet I think is to look into phpmyadmin (there’s a plugin that gives easy access to it, I think… don’t quote me).

This will let you walk through your database and manually edit the parent category for those lost children.

Once you’ve changed that you can go into the wp interface and fix what’s busted.

    Thanks Ivovic.

The plugin does exist and is named phpmyadmin, found it on Google easily.

When installed I found the categories parent/child list by first browsing to the wordpress database, then to wp_term_taxonomy (you’ll find it on the left) and there it is possible to reset all child-categories to no-parent.

And like you said, they showed up in the wp interfaces.

    Thanks again for the reply.

Hope this can help someone else as well.

    OMG LIFE IS GOOD AGAIN.

I’ve been searching for answers for the last 48 hours non-stop and finally I found this post! I knew it had to be fixable via the database but couldn’t find “where” to do the fixing.

Thank you kindly for sharing ??
