Hello again. I’ve recently updated your plugin to version 2.0 and notice two problems, one of them is rather serious.

First, when editing the widget there is no way to close the box. The “X” in the top right does nothing. It doesn’t happen with any other widgets, only Feature A Page, and it wasn’t a problem until the recent update.

    ———————

Second, since the update “Continue Reading” has appeared at the bottom of each Feature A Page widget. The “Read More” box is not clicked.
    https://placesandpics.com/
In the first row, Featured Locations, the Continue Reading text is barely visible because I have set the widget height. In the lower row, Featured Photo Sets, “Continue Reading” is obvious.

I’m not even sure if the Continue Reading problem is caused by this plugin since there were several updates at the same time, including the theme. I’m searching the theme (Weaver Xstreme) and WordPress options for another setting that might be calling this out.

    Hi @bobthearch,

Thanks for using Feature a Page Widget and sorry to hear about these problems. Let’s figure them out!

To do that, I need some clarifications and additional information.

    1. Have you tested this with a default theme (one of the Twenty _____ ones) and all other plugins disabled?
    2. When you say “close the box,” are you referring to the “Customizer?”
    3. Assuming you are on the Customizer, can you save the widget if you’re working on Appearance > Widgets?
    4. If you know how to look in your browser console, are there any errors when working in the Customizer
    5. Does your blog page have a “Continue Reading” link? That link is definitely not the one for the widget, but it might be getting applied to the excerpt in the widget based on the new templating system.

I may need access to your site in order to fully diagnose these issues based on what I’m guessing. If you want to go ahead and do that, please add an Admin user for info-AT-MRWweb-dot-com.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to use InstantWP to see if the default WP themes are affected in the same way.

Here is a screenshot of the box that won’t close.

If the Continue Reading message isn’t from your widget, I will ask in the Weaver Xstreme forum for assistance with that. They had an update about the same time as you.

Thanks for the screenshot. Can you tell me what theme or plugin lets you edit widgets that way? It is not a core way of editing widgets, so I’m not surprised it doesn’t work. I can see that it fails to load the admin javascript and stylesheet so that’s probably the issue. If it’s a plugin and has a large userbase, I’ll consider adding explicit support for it in the widget or requesting that they fix the underlying bug. (If my guess as to why it doesn’t work is correct, then other widgets probably don’t work either.)

I assume this is the Weaver Xtreme that your site uses? If so, I see that they have “Continue Reading…” links on their site and so I think it’s still coming from the plugin. If those had before the 2.0 update, I might have a guess as to where they’re from, but since they didn’t, I’m unsure why they’re there. If you could ask the theme, I’d love to learn some more information from them.

Yes, I’ve posted about it at the Weaver X support forum. No reply yet.

    https://forum.weavertheme.com/discussion/11890/continue-reading-appeared-with-last-update#latest

I’m using the latest version of WordPress, the latest version of Weaver Xstreme theme, and to customize the widgets (border, rounded corners, background color) I’m using Widget Customizer.

As a test, I disabled the Widget Customizer plugin and it made no difference with either issue.

I believe I’ve narrowed down the problem.

The front page at https://www.placesandpics.com is created with PageBuilder by Site Origin.
    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/siteorigin-panels/
Your widget works in the sidebar widget areas, but no longer works in the PageBuilder rows. I’ve tested this with Weaver Xstreme, Twenty-ten, and Twenty-Fourteen. The symptoms are that you can choose a page to feature or select any of the options, but nothing is saved and the Feature does not appear on the page.

The Widget Customizer is not an issue, and works well with the latest version of Feature A Page Widget in my tests.

With my live website, https://www.placesandpics.com , the Feature A Page widgets that were in place before the upgrade are still displayed. But I cannot add any new Feature A Page widgets…

This is quite serious for my site. Can I roll back the Feature A Page Widget to the previous version?

One more bit of information before I retire for the evening:
On the live website I can duplicate an existing Feature A Page widgets but I cannot add a new Feature A Page widget.

    (@bobthearch)

Although this problem ended up being unrelated to your widget, here’s how the “Continue Reading” issue was resolved: Following the instructions by the Weaver Xstreme developer, enter this into the Custom CSS box in the theme options:

    a.more-link {display:none;}

Maybe someone else reading your support forum will make use of this as well.

    HI @bobthearch,

After a lot of troubleshooting, I just released v2.0.1 that should now have support for Site Origin’s Page Builder. That is the interface that was causing the issues and it turns out that widgets that use javascript will not work without explicit support. This actually makes me surprised the widget was working before!

Either way, please update, test, and then let me know if that resolves your 2nd issue.

As for the “Continue Reading” links, I’m glad you were able to resolve that. I may make a change in a future version of the widget that would have prevented the issue, but your fix will work. It’s a tricky situation where I’m unsure of what the expected behavior would be.

I’ve just installed the updated version 2.0.1 and it now works flawlessly within SiteOrigin’s Page Builder plugin.
I’m sure the fix will benefit many other users as well, but I especially appreciate your prompt response and continued development of this plugin.

    @bobthearch,

Glad we were able to get it working and thanks for the positive review! That’s a great way to say thanks for the support. I really appreciate it.

Best to you and your site.
