2.2.1 upgrade effs up my text

I finally attended to the daily Fantastico email alerts to upgrade to 2.2.1. So I let Fantastico do its thing and now I’ve got a bunch of text errors to show for it.

Every quote, hyphen, currency sign, carriage return, even spaces, have been replaced by random symbols like ‘?’.

Apart from manually editing 150 some posts, how do I fix this screw-up?

And before you ask, I’m just a funny travel writer. I’m not savvy enough to back off the upgrade or anything else that requires coding, server work, cascading style sheets or whatever it is that actual web masters do. They invented Fantastico to help (and subsequently screw) people like me.
