• I have to admit, that I’m heavily annoyed by the way the 2.5 admin turned out. I’m using WordPress for years now and with every update it got better. But this one is a step back, by graphic design as by functionality.

Drag’n’drop widgets gone. Huzzah! back to olden days…
Admin-GUI by no means more accessible or more ordered, you find nothing

And my biggest concern is the new post-GUI: EVERYTHING lined up in one row? gimme a break! categories UNDER the post, so i have to scroll? Image-insertion in a popup??? You cannot be serious?

I installed Fluency to get the admin panel a little more bearable, but I will definitely go back to 2.3.3, I certainly hope there will be security-updates for that version. If not, I will probably switch to another software altogether.

A pity, since I tested quite some blog softwares and WordPress was my favourite…

  • You can put this code

    ‘#poststuff #categorydiv {
    width: 380px; position:absolute; top:11%; left:44%; background:#fff; z-index:100;
    }’

at the end of your global.css. This places the category-div beside the text “Write Post”. Works in FF2, IE7 and Opera 9.2. You can see it here.

To move back to 2.3.3, I just copied all the 2.3.3 files back in to the directories. BUT USERS CAN NO LONGER LOG IN. The passwords are no longer usable, so you have to restore them in MySQL Admin (or however you might access the database). Instructions are here. I only had 5 users to reset (and only a couple of them actually active), but it would be rather tedious for a much larger number.

I have to agree with all the previous negative comments about the WP2.5 admin UI. As I mentioned before in https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/159760#post-705609 , WP 2.5 admin UI is a total frack up!
Please fix the admin UI! It SUCKS!
    ??

I upgraded to 2.5 for some nice features that I wanted on one particular site I’m building, and I’ll stick with it for that site. But I’ll stick with 2.3 for my other blogs as a lot of the new stuff is simply badly designed. Chiming in with my own observations:

    1) I agree with many posters here: moving categories and some of the other things from the sidebar to below the Write panel is really, really dumb. This stuff was easily accessible in the sidebar before, now I’m constantly scrolling about to find what I need to do, and a load of useful space on the side of the screen is now wasted.

    2) Automatically creating a permalink as I start typing is also stupid. Serious bloggers wnat to create post slugs themeselves and often the title of the post won’t be the slug. Why should I have to edit something I didn’t want in the first place? This was a silly choice.

    3) The media management is really bad. I thought it would be a proper tool: you know, like I could actually use it to, oh, I don’t know, manage my media? Why then can’t I add new media through it’s menu option? I can’t stand having to go into a post just to add some new media items, that’s really, really dumb, esepcially if I want to use them in multiple posts. I had also hoped to see some of Flexible Upload’s features in there: being able to specify a thumbnail size on the fly and also whether to use the width or height to resize against. While I think the new uploader IS better, it’s still missing a load of useful features.

I don’t reallyknow what’s going on with Happy Cog these days. They are a well respected agency, yet after Zeldman’s recent “stance hopping” on IE8’s traget switching behaviour, and this rather odd “upgraded” of WP, I’m beginning to wonder if they are losing the plot a little.

colors are colors and this are easy to change, if someone would like to have grey instead of *pinky blue* ??

but this Admin GUI is not usability. Scroll down to fill out all necessary fields and after this scroll up to save or publish.

if Zeldmann thought this is a new way how we have to define usability I’ll give up my job ??

widgets are for all of us who can’t or wouldn’t code. now nobody can’t see what he has done. click here and there and everywhere is the new way to manage widgets.

I hope you all have a very new and pretty mouse to do all this clicks;)

*our new mediathek* is the best — so was the marketing for WP 2.5.

maybe! but it doesn’t work for more than half of our wp users.

filosofos old plugin for the upload WP 2.3.3 and versions before was the best.

upload- define the width and height of the thumb, define left or center or right-and move to the editor.

why it is necessary to have a gallery in the backend?

    write a post.

    1. fill in the title
    2. type your text
3.scroll up to upload a photo
    4. scroll down to fill tags, categories, customs fields,
5.scroll up to safe -to see the preview of this post

    6.publish

    scroll up-scroll down-scroll up

is this the modern way of sport for our mouse ??

11 clicks and copy and paste to move a text widget from sidebar 1 to sidebar 2 ==> thats the new way of usability

    I can’t believe it – I can’t.

    kindly regards
    Monika

I’ve edited 2.5’s edit-form-advanced.php to make writing posts more efficient. Here’s a screen shot.

I had added the $saveasdraft (“Save and Continue”) button, but it did not behave correctly.

Click here for a copy. BACK UP THE ORIGINAL FILE FIRST! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Reports of improvements are very welcome.

I did not alter any other file (i.e., CSS files), using only local style directives. I still can’t stand the media uploader, but it is not used much on our high-volume blog.

Ericr23, you should DEFINITELY release this as a plugin!

ericr23, you’re my hero. Your mod works great with the Fluency plugin, FYI.

OK. I’ve rearranged edit-form-advanced.php so it’s usable. I’ve hacked the media upload so it does what I want.

But I’m still incredibly annoyed that it takes so many clicks to even see what drafts I have saved. Why aren’t they listed at the top of the Write panel?

    I downgraded. Happy again. ??

I second the opinions that the move of almost everything in the ‘Write’ section from the sidebar to the bottom of the page is not a usability improvement, nor it is a time-saver!

Please, move everything back to the sidebar, because the ‘Write’ page is much easier to use this way: main text & title to the left, category, date, allow/disallow pings/comments, post password, etc. – to the right. This saves time, and reduces un-needed scrolling.

I am a WP user since version 2.0.5 (since January 2007). If the sidebar is not restored almost the way it was before 2.5 was released, I’ll have to downgrade all of my blogs, or simply hack WP, as editing the admin CSS styles won’t help move the panels to the sidebar, unfortunately… ??

    Thanks for listening:)))

I upgraded ONE blog because there were nag notes saying Please. I won’t do any others until some of this is ironed out. I do not like the new format. WordPress has become increasingly difficult to use with each upgrade. I have never used peculiar templates, but worked with their classic template and different colors, etc. However, the write dashboard has become more and more confusing. Is there a paid feature coming or something that is preparing by thinning out the user base? Or requiring us to have a ‘professional’ wordpress geek install and work on everything.

If you don’t want us uploading and storing photos, just say so. Then, make a reliable linking system to whereever we have them posted online. I’m one of those who didn’t even get the gallery option, plus old photos are gone. Glad this is a short blog without a lot of photos.

I also came here from blogger because I liked the self-hosting option. Now, I have to learn to live with increased difficulty or learn Joomla. ?? Things could be worse, and they are headed there.

I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I really have been grateful for WordPress, but given that 2.5 renders so many plug-ins useless, it is a wasted opportunity.

I like that the editor can now be toggled full-screen but generally, there seems to be SO much wasted space.

It definitely feels that categories should be to the right of the edit area… it seems a lonnggg way down. Especially seeing as to the right is the massive published status area, which I am sure would fit into 32 pixels square, and the publish date where any attempts to change it are completely ignored any way.

I am still a WordPress fan but it is definitely one steps forwards two steps back.

I’m pretty new to WP and overall I love it. But:

I should be able to add pictures to a folder or gallery or whatever without messing with the post or page.

The world is going WIDE. Things off to the right was nice.

    Where is my draft button?

Haven’t figured out the new plugin thing yet. Was the drag and drop too simple to use? JK ?? Was cool how it worked.

    Thanks for a great product.

I upgraded, posted a rant about the usability of the Write Post screen, and now I find that I’m not alone.

A few weeks ago, I read the “sneak peek” about this page:

By far, the most frequently accessed part of WordPress is the Write screen. It gets the job done, but its myriad options can be overwhelming. The new write screen only displays the information that you’ll use most often. It displays the most common fields in a way that makes posting incredibly easy. Additional options are hidden away until you need them. The new Write screen anticipates the natural flow of the way you write, and is smart enough to remember the way you left it so that your preferred writing environment is always quickly available. The new visual editor even has a handy full-screen mode to help block out distractions while composing your newest post. (My personal favorite new feature.)

And I must admit that I probably “mixed in” these comments about the Dashboard:

You can… edit the way information is presented so that the new Dashboard conforms to the way you use WordPress.

There are two problems that I can see. First, the page doesn’t “display the information that you’ll use most often”, it displays the information that some UI designer (probably not a hard-core blogger) thought you would use most often. If one could actually edit the UI so that it conforms to the way one uses it, that would be great.

The second problem is that the UI is very space-inefficient. Earth to WP: we don’t all compose our blogs on 24 inch iMacs. Many of us use cellphones, or subnotebooks, or even internet tablets. Space matters.

And whatever happened to that full-screen mode anyway?
